What is cascamite? Sounds like some kind of really hard glue.

I'm glad Bruce asked that. I thought maybe I'd been living in a cave since I've never heard of it either.

Waterproof wood glue used primarily for boat building. Never used it.

I heard it was his next door neighbor's lawn that was especially nice...   

If it doesn't rain soon, neither of us will have to cut all that grass again this year. It was 105 in Beebe yesterday and dry as a bone.

Howard, did you use it to glue everything on the guitar?

I just used it to join my top plates. I made sure they were a perfect fit and clamped them really tight. There was no really visible line.

Someone recommended that I use it. This is my frist guitar, so i was wondering if it was anygood for guitar building. I can't find hide glue, so I have few alternatives. Is there something that would be better than this that is widely accessable?

Bill good old Titebond as well as LMI's white glue will work quite well. Hide glue can be bought online from most of the major suppliers.

Should you use it on a first guitar: No.

Do I use it for everything: No. The only thing for which I use it is
laminating double sides.

I think Cascamite is a brand name in the UK for a urea-formadehyde glue.
The equivalent here is Weldwood Plastic Resin glue. But if it's the really
waterproof stuff, it may be a resorcinol glue.

And I asked another question.

It is definitely cascamite. It says it on the bag.I did some research on it. As i stated before my options are limited. Is there something else that is widely accessable that I would be able to use. Something that I could find at a hardwood store for example.

I live in China. In order find something I have to really search. I have not found hide glue, but I have access to all kinds of white glue.

Why wouldn't you recommend using it on my first guitar?

Mainly because you need to mix up a batch and then use it within a
couple of hours. Also because it is nearly impossible to take apart after it
sets, and some parts of the guitar should be able to be taken apart for
repair (or if you don't get it right the first time). It is somewhat brittle and
therefore lacks strength if the joints are not very tight (although it bonds
very strongly in a good joint), or in a part that needs to be flexible. Some
people have found that the joint is more visible on light colored wood
because the glue is brown. I'd suggest that you look for a good aliphatic
resin glue, which includes the white and yellow glues, for ease of use and
repairability. Usually the yellow ones are a stronger grade, although the
color is just an additive. If I had to build with just one glue it would be an
aliphatic resin ("PVA": poly vinyl acetate) glue.

Bill, can you find gelatin in the grocery stores? It is the same as hide glue but more expensive. Here is a link to Frank Ford's site where he shows using Knoxx unflavored gelatin. Glue link

Hi Don. Thanks a lot. He recommends it for occasional use and for attaching labels. I don't know if it would be suitable for bridge gluing or for a fret board. I'll on his forum and see what responses I get.billb38588.9072453704

Bill, yes Russell's right Cascamite is the UK brand name. The 'Quote' extract didn't work quite how I planned it. The "Now that is useful information!" part refers to Howard saying he used Cascamite for his side lamination, to me that is very useful information.

I`ve used the stuff by the barrel back when I was building wooden boats. Great for boats but I`d not like to bring it in to my guitar shop. Too messy and definately a dark purpleish glue line in light woods. It will stain like crazy!

I just bought some white glue (Poly vinyl acetate).

I used cascamite to join my top plates which were spruce and I had no problem. The thing with cascamite that i have learned is you have to have a perfect fit. I wasn't really sure about using the white glue. I thought it was cheap because everyone's always going on about hide glue and titebond and LMI. This left me a little confused. Anyway, I've got a better understanding now. Thanks a lot guys.
