Wow, I'm still speechless over a conversation I had with the folks at Oneida. They make a great looking 3hp dust collector I'm really interested in. When I called them to check on shipping, they told me it would be $370!!! That just seems outrageous. By comparison, Grizzly will ship a similar unit for $81, and some others have shipping around $100. Anything up to $150 even seems reasonable because of the size and weight, but at $370, it seems they are making around $200 profit just on shipping. How can this be? I'm still stunned and amazed...

John,

I need dust collection too, but I would not pay that! It is robbery! How can they justify it? Did they explain why it was so much?

Guys, I don't know if this is OK...Lance, if it's not please remove the post and accept my apologies...but, I have a Penn State cyclone system that I just don't need anymore since my furniture building days are over...check it out on their website and see if you're interested...I can ship FedEx cheap too, way cheaper than $370!!!

Larry,

Which model PSI cyclone do you have? The only thing I really know about cyclones is what I've readon Bill Pentz's website. He obviously touts the performance of his systems, but there are also a lot of other nice systems out there. Also, what type of dust collection do you now use for guitar building?

Cheers!

John

John, I'll go out and check the exact model and send you a link to the website...I believe it's the 2hp because it's 115V...I plumbed my shop with 8" PVC and ran all my furniture-making tools to it...now, I'm using only a 2hp Grizzly 2-stage to my bandsaw, sander, and tablesaw along with a shop vac to my RO sander and small benchtop belt sander...clean up is a breeze, as they say.

L..
what h.p. shop vac to the r.o. sander?

John,
Sad but true...some companies expect you to pay for every phase the machine gets put through to get it to you.Crating, personnel, paperwork, etc. It should be included in the price as far as I'm concerned.Look at your reaction! Mine would be the same too.

I live in Indiana, so shipping from New York shouldn't be that much more. They will not ship any of their 3hp or larger units any other way than freight--unusual considering there are many cheaper options out there. I think their shipping costs will drive away many potential customers. I can buy a lot of duct work and blast gates for $370.

BTW, I have family in PA so asked for a shipping quote there figuring I could pick it up next time I was in town--same price, $370.

Todd,

How do you like your 2 hp Oneida? I called them back and the price to ship a 2 hp model is $130 (huge difference). Apparently there is a huge difference in shipping once you step up to anything larger than 2 hp. I'm not sure why this doesn't hold true for other companies, like Grizzly?

Anyhow, total cost might dictate I go with the 2hp vs. 3hp model. How much ducting (also, what size ducting) and what type of tools are you using with it? My biggest concern is that it be able to work well with a dual drum sander someday. I never plan on using more than 1 tool at a time, so if you're at least getting 800 true CFM (after static pressure), that might be good enough.

Thanks!

John, the one tool at a time is key...I took the largest tool I have (the 24" dual drum sander), and used it's required CFM and added 20%...with 8" PVC I've never had a problem....

I know that some Rockler stores stock one model of the Oneida, and as a result you can save some shipping costs when picking it up at the store I believe. 998.
