Hi Folks - Whilst as the ASIA symposium I happen to catch Stephen Couch and a friend jamming on two of Matt Gages sweet guitars, the RESO is show stopper!

Thanks Dad for putting this video together!

Enjoy!

Wow did that bring back memories. Matt's dorm room sounded like that every night. Lots of extraordinary guitar picking and singing, everything from gypsy jazz to bluegrass with everything in between. Steve makes it look so easy. Matt ain't to bad himself, did you catch any of his playing Lance. Thanks for he replay

The ASIA Symposium is every other year and is held on the east coast. The Healdsburg Guitar Festival is held every year in Healdsburg, CA. The GAL (Guild of American Luthiers) conference is held in alternating years from the ASIA Symposium so next year the Luthiers conference to go to would be GAL. It is held in Tacoma, WA.

I agree about Matt's Reso and Stephen's playing. A good, well setup Resonator Guitar will sing (project) and in the hands of a gifted player becomes magic. It was a treat to see and hear. Every time that Stephen picked up Matt's Reso to play, everyone in the place would turn to where the sound was coming from. And the look of "Zoot" Pomelle Sapele made the guitar deliciously over the top. Most Reso's look too subdued but Matt's looked killer with a sound to match.

The guy with couch is Steve Kovachik of New York. He is one hell of a builder himself. Actually he is one of the guys that is responsible for me being in this hobby.
Thanks again
loved the tunes.

I forgot to mention. I asked Steve how he had the res tuned. He called it "Cheater G" tuning. Standard tuning with the high E tuned to G

That guitar and that guitar player (Steve) were one of the best things going at ASIA IMO. Everytime I saw Steve reach for one of Matt's guitars I scrambled over to listen. I really liked the sound of that resophonic. It was a beautiful guitar as well as a great wailer!

Thanks for sharing that, Lance.

I had the pleasure of jamming with both of them on a couple of occations at the symposium. They are both great gitar players and singers, and both have great taste in music. It was my fist time at one of the big luthier's happenings, but it won't be the last, I had a fantasic time.
