Squareneck, styled after a Scheerhorn L model. The top and back are 3-pieces, flamed maple with a birdseye center wedge. I'm not sure what I will do for the finish, except to say that I will probably do a burst of some color.




The images look a little funky-shaped because of the angle, but they should give you an idea what it's gonna be like. The flamed maple is from Lowes...

I guess that depends on who is making it! I'm tapering this one....4" to 3.5". Although I may make it a tad less deep if it looks funny.

Nice progress Don, How was it bending the sides?Like the 3 pc.back. I have a set of Curly maple that keeps looking at me in the shop.I want to do a reso I should say i'm using the IBEX iron from LMI,Ive bent some mahogany and Alaskan yellow cedar.I'm a begginer.Should it be a dry or wet,damp bend.I heard of ripples after bending figured wood.Or should I wait till I get a few under my belt before the Maple? Any help would be appreciated.Let me know if I should ask in the main forum.

This maple is a soft variety that I picked up from my local Lowes. It bends almost by itself. I say "almost". I bent it with a heat blanket, really thick, without a whole lot of heat, with a good spritzing of water. Very minimal discoloration from the water, and that was it. In fact, I touched up the bends on the pipe afterward, and over-bent the waist. So all I did was spritz that area with some water, forced the bend open with my hands, and clamped into the outside mold and the shape held. It was the easiest wood to bend I've ever used.

Hi Wade buddy! Missed ya at the last NEL meeting...
The sides are up around .120 or so...yes, very thick! My neck is from a block of flamed maple I bought from HK Hardwoods when they were in Charleton, MA. Since they moved down south of Taunton, they stopped carrying much in the way of exotic woods, mostly flooring now. Such a shame. They were once the best supplier in the area. Anyway, the block is 3" x 8" x 24" or so. Plenty for two necks.

Ya, I hated to miss the meeting.
We are renovating a house and trying to get buttoned up before the weather change.
Do you figure the neck wood is stable enough or would you laminate the block with some contrasting woods to make it more stable.
The reason I'm asking is I have had a few "issues" with maple and have found if it is laminated, it seemed to keep the neck streight and it looks nice too.
I guess I just don't trust anything un-mohogany.

Well, I was planning to put some CF in there, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to slice it and laminate somethin' in there... I'll let you know what I decide.

Update:
I hope to be closing up the soundbox this weekend. The neck is at 80%, so if I can just get the stupid ivoroid to stick to the ebony fretboard, all will be well.

Don: If you don't mind me asking, What is the width of the neck at the nut and 12th fret? Also, what type of baffle are you going to use?

That Lowes maple looks pretty good. The Lowes stores around here only have oak, poplar, pine, and aspen.

D.L., It's a little narrow I think. Good thing it's not a roundneck! I think it's around 2.125" or so. Not much wider than the nut. I figured it was going to be hard enough learning to play the thing, so I didn't want the strings running too far off parallel. The nut is actually close to 2", a bit wider than on the Beard plans. But I bought their pre-slotted nut, and that was the width, so I figured that's what I should make it. I'm hoping I don't regret it...

It will be fine Don, I was just curious. My personal guitar is 2" at the nut, 2 7/32" at the 12th.

Here are a couple of pictures of past resophonic guitars ,
both showing the necks in "the white".
One is a "tricone" the other a "Triolian" single cone.
I hope they are of some interest .

Well, I thought for sure I had messed up the reso but good. I woke up in the middle of the night a couple nights back and was instantly recalling measuring the body so that the cone was exactly 12.5". The problem was though, that I thought I was building mine with a 25.4" scale, which for some reason I had in my brain was .10" shy of standard. I was pretty ticked that the body was no good. Of course as most folks who build reso's know, they are standard at 25" scale, not 25.5". So the real issue was that I slotted the fretboard at 25.4" instead of 25". An easy fix.

Well Don, It looks as though you have the early stages of reso-nitus. Once you get it built and start playing, it goes down hill from there
