   Is there a basic guideline on leaving knots and imperfections in a BS set? I`m in the process of getting a few sets together, but there almost always seems to be that one small knot or a single line of spalting that I just can`t seem to get around. I have quite a few of these, and I`m thinking that they might kill the sale value somewhat. Looking at the rest of the beauties that I see on this forum, I`m just wondering if I`m being selective enough. I personally like knots when they`re in the right places-like what you see on cedar "hopeless chests".
   Also I`m going to be cutting a pretty good sized piece of walnut up. Anybody in need of BS sets?

It's all personal preference. Some people like the super clear, uniform sets and figure. Others love wild stuff. Hand builders are actually very forgiving when it comes to flaws, knots.. or should we call them "character".. A B&S with a few little spots truely is 1 of a kind where 1 5A set generally looks just like the next.

That`s pretty much what I`m figuring at this point. "Character", huh? Characteristic in the craftsmanship or character doing it?
By the way, Jason, gaining ground on those FB`s. Pretty busy in the shop, so I`ll get a couple off to you sometime this month.

Hi Cocephus, Is this American Black, Claro, or...? If American Black, was it steamed? Is this relatively uniform browns, or does this have strong striping, or any figure? How close to 90° quartersawn will you be able to cut? Any photos?

   Sure... Just emailed Lance awhile ago about the same thing. Don`t know what species, but I can say that it has wide striping, and getting a good quarter cut is almost out of the question (close, but no cigar). Since I`m getting replies on this I`ll get it in gear on getting it cleaned up so we all can have a better look at it before we commit to it. I`ll be sure to get pics out asap, but don`t hold your breath.
   I`m still figuring out a jig that I can resaw this big ole gal without losing too much to the cut (pesky kerf monster!) What I`m planning is to cut by hand with a big backsaw to keep a narrow kerf. More to follow on this topic.

No hurry Just thought I would get some walnut in house.
