You wont belive just what happened. I ran down to the local quick stop conv./gas store to pick up a pack of cancer sticks. as I was leaving I had to drive over the 3' x 3' valve covers for the gas tanks that are mounted in the drive way of the parking lot. One poped up and hit the under carriage of my suburban. These covers are made of 3/8" thick diamond plate and are square not the little round ones and set in a resest mounting flange flush with the asphalt. Anyway it took out all of my coolant lines, and transmission to radiator hydrolic line, but that is not the worst of it, The corner of the plate punched a hole through the main frame member and bent and stress fractured the wishbone structure of the right front suspension. Al this at just 3-5 mph. Insurance adjuster is on his way over, but from previous experance with damaged frames, my guess is that they will total the vehicel. from the out side it looks perfect but look at the under carriage and the front right frame members are a mess. I was just 12 months from having the thing paid off ![]() Moral of the story here boys and girls is don't ever start smoking. the things will do more than just kill you ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Sorry for your loss.....hopefully the gas station insurance will cover it, not yours. They should.
Mine first then they will go after the gas station's liability insurance. It will cost me $200 up front and we will see from there. |

Things had to be just right (wrong) for this to happen the way it did, but Mr murphy jumped up and bit. The adjuster just called and told me he is recamending that the vehical be totaled due to the stress fractures in the frame. He said the hole is no big issue but the fractures are. Being a machaical engineer by trade I know that those fractures are now stress risers in the c-channel of the frame, and all loads are trnfered to the weakest piont, Welding them up is not a good idea. So I see the adjusters point. but I did not want a new vehical. I really liked my suburban ![]() |

That is a real bummer! always something... Seems to me if you are in business and you openly invite the public on to your premises you have a responsibility/liability to ensure that it is safe. Any damage that is foreseeable and preventable by the vendor and ignored should/would be the full responsiblity of the vendor. There's a fancy legal term for it but the concept is simple. I would talk to the owner about covering the deductible as well. Hey maybe they will offer you free slurpee's for life or something! Hope it all comes out o.k. |
