I'm using Maria Preta (Diatenopteryx sorbifolia) for a guitar, and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about it. I got it from a friend who bought it at a lumber yard that was going out of buisiness. I've checked the web and can't find much about it except that is a favorite sleeping tree for tufted capuchin monkeys.
It is incredibly hard and stiff (the back at .075 felt like sheet metal). It has a purple color like EIR but with lighter streaks, and a rosewood smell too. I'm not sure how much importance I give to tap tones, but this stuff rings like a bell when you hit it.
   Anybody have any info?

   Thanks, Paul

Sound Good Paul, could we see a pic of the wood.

My advice would be to keep the finished guitar away from monkeys

Nobody "used" Maria Preta...she was the prettiest/smartest girl in school. In fact, we were all too intimidated to even talk to her.

I'll post some pictures when I finish the guitar, assuming that I can figure out how to do it with my very limited computer skills.
Since nobody seems to have heard of it, I guess I can advertise it as the only one in captivity.

We're waiting anxiously...we haven't seen her in a lot of years! Probably put on a lot of weight.

Well, here she is, and she and her bandmates look pretty peeved that anyone even thought about using her!
