Is anyone here using the Santa Cruz open back tuners? I attached a link below if anyone wants to check them out. I was just wondering how they compare to others out there. I know that they are much cheaper than the waverlys. I love the vintage tuner look.

Did any one notice the stamping on the tuners in the picture at Santa Cruz's websight? It looks to me like an other famous name stamped on the tumer If not take a close look MichaelP38653.6918634259

I had a Santa Cruz OM/PW for awhile. I have to say that I was impressed by the guitar, but disappointed in the tuners. There was a lag space when you went down in tuning that was considerable. You had to lower more than needed, then come back up. I put a set of Waverly tuners on the guitar briefly, but took them off before selling it. The Waverlys were MUCH more precise.

That was my only complaint about the guitar. Otherwise, it was simply a preference question that led to me selling it. I just prefer Martins (which isn't a bad thing!).

I have been using the Grovers (which yes are the same tuner) and have loved the Nickle plated ones but have been dissapointed with the Gold ones. So far I have had problems with 3 out of Secven sets of gold tunners. Grover Replaces them but it is a hassle, especially when they are on a clients guitar on tour on another contenent.

That is interesting, I use the Nickel ones sometimes as I think they are great value and have never had a problem with them, I had a set of gold the other day and two of the six tuners where too tights and just did not run free, I got them replaced and the new set are fine.

You wouldn't think that the colour would effect the performance, the only theory I had was maybe the Gold coating is thicker or something, and this effects them.

Of course my experience is only of one set, but I have made the same observation.

I dont think these are Grovers.
These tuners look much nicer than the Grovers.

Yes the Grover nickle ones are great never a problem. I tell customers they are 90% the quality of Waverly's at 25% the cost. I have only had problems with the Gold ones but when talking to a luthier who was one of the guys in the group buy a few years ago that really encouraged us all toward them, he said he has had a few people comment to him about them not being as good as they were made to sound. This luthiers comment was that they seem to have a bit of a quality control issue. Fortunately the problem is obvious as soon as you get them (gears not meeting right making them either too tight or loose) and you can get tne bad ones replaced easily. If you don't believe that the SC are grovers why not call Grover and Ask (I did and they told me they make em for SC and that the only difference is the stamp and the buttons) or better yet, call Santa Cruz and ask them. I am sure they will tell you that grover builds them to a higher standsard for them but according to grover they all come off the same line.arvey38654.7344444444

I talked to someone at Santa Cruz about a year ago and he said they are the same tuners - 18:1 open back grovers with Santa Cruz stamped on the plate. I have bought 3 sets of the nickels (plain old Grovers) and they work fine - I don't know about the golds.

I purchase my tuners direct from Grover, in bulk. Yes, Grover makes the tuners (in Asia) for SCGC but the only difference besides the name is SCGC purchases the tuners without buttons. They install their own buttons.

I am on my second case of Grovers and just experienced my first failure (on a gold G string tuner). The customer called and said the worm screw teeth stripped out after the 4th string change.

I love the tuners and will continue to use them as my standard equipment.

I will also continue to use them but I now inspect them carefully before putting them on a guitar. If they seem bad they don't go on.
