As far as sound characteristics, how would you all compare the sound of ovangkol to that of mahogany? I couldn't seem to find anything in the archives. Thanks! John |

John actually Ovangkol or Shedua ia in the same family as bubinga. Quite a bit harder and heavier than mahogany. |

Ovangkol, aka Amazaque as well (just BTW) is tonally more towards the rosewood end of the spectrum than the mahogany end, IMO. Sits a little past the half-way mark between honduran and EIR. Ish. I do really like the sound of it in the guitars I've played that use it (Taylor's 400 series instruments), and I should probably get a hold of some eventually. Only real downside: the stuff stinks. Literally. Rarely have I smelt a wood as unpleaseant as that. |
