Hi...I am new here and can see that there is a huge quantity of helpful information. As a trade I do custom inlay work and have built one guitar. I am currently working on my second guitar and making all new mistakes :) Here is a photo of the headstock so far...

Thanks for the warm welcome! No relation to Dave Nichols...none that I know of anyway:) The guitar is Zircote Back and sides...which I would highly reccommend against for anyone as a second guitar. Hindsight always being 20/20. It has been somewhat tough to work with. The top is Engleman spruce. The headstock and backstrap are also Zircote. I decided to make this an Autumn theme guitar. The fretboard has several other leaf inlays and since the inlay begins on the headstock and runs onto the fretboard it will also run off the fretboard at the other end onto the body of the guitar. I'll try and get a few more photos up as time allows. thanks again for the welcome..this seems like a really great place! |

I have no plans of ever taking orders for complete guitars...I'll stick to inlay work :) However since this is the "Autumn Guitar" there will also have to be a Winter, Spring and Summer Guitar. I should be done with the series in about 10 years :) |

G'day Bill, It's a GREAT place to be ! Your inlay is incredible. I'm not just saying that to be nice to the "new guy". Wow! I just love it! Now, as you may or may not know, I'm probably the brains of the outfit.I also make a shoe polish and invented and grow a fruit to satisfy the world market. Yes, it certainly keeps me busy. Luckily enough ,I find guitar building a walk in the park, so it doesn't take too much of my time to knock out a few world beaters (very heavily inlayed),including vine inlays on the front and back of the neck. As a matter of fact ,I knocked out a triple neck one this morning. Fairly boring stuff really. I hang out here to help out the other poor b------s cause I feel so sorry for them. If you need any help,Particularly with your inlaying, you better let me know. I'm also incredibly good looking! Regards KiwiCraig

Beautiful work Bill! You should check out Alan Carruth's Season Series of guitars...he did some seriously nice stuff with mozaic maple leaves. It was awesome! Your work looks fantastic. My first guitar was ziricote, and I bent the sides on a pipe. So I can appreciate the difficulties it presents. But, it is also the most beautiful wood out there in my mind, with the exception perhaps of Mad Rose, which can be even more stunning with nice colors. Welcome to the OLF...it's nice to have another great inlay artist here to keep Craig Lavin company! |

For those not "in the know", Bill is the infamous "Captain Bill", who has graced the Acoustic Guitar Forum (formerly the Taylor Guitar Forum) for several years. His custom truss rod covers, and all kinds of other custom inlay, is legendary over there. He's a top shelf guy, and will definitely be a significant contributor here.
