I have read with interest all of the side bending threads but I have never seen this one:

Material: EIR (but with a very funky grain)
Design: Classical

I was thicknessing the sides using a Safety Planer and a scallop of wood splintered off of one side of one piece. Needless to say, I immediately took the sides (4 in all) over to the thickness sander and finished there.

Here's the problem. I now have a piece in that if the sides were plain, I would pitch them but they're not. It is also not easily (read: Impossible to be) matched. The scallop removed a 1/4" of wood along about 8-10 inches. Fortunately, the missing wood is near the end and in the position where the taper will begin. The taper will remove some of the problem but the purfling will take care of the rest and hide the fact that it was ever there.

So, do I proceed and create a "false line" when I put in the kerfed lining (Knowing that it will be hidden eventually) or try to bend the side with the piece glued back in place? On the other hand, I could simply build a shallow guitar with 3-1/2" sides instead of 3-3/4". My only real arguement against that is that I am building 2 matching guitars. One with a Spruce top and the other, cedar.

Too many options here and I don't have the experience to pick the best one. Thanks for your help.

Steve

Hi Steve

One option is to glue the piece back in with a waterproof glue, and then proceed, at the end of the day you could just leave it knowing that it will be gone, but if you are anything like me it will drive you crazy to look at it all the way through your build.

What would you recommend as a glue that will withstand bending? That was what stopped me from doing that immediately.

Thanks, Steve

Either CA or a waterproof PVA.

I would glue the piece back in so I wouldn’t have to work around a gap. Since its going to be removed anyway, I see no reason to scrap the side.

Thanks Guys,

Your concensus was pretty much what I was thinking but since I've little experience, I thught it best to ask before plowing ahead.
