I need a very tall nut blank for a guitar I am working on. The reason is a combination of factors. I am only in the market for a couple of these. Anyone know where I could find something like this?

Stewmac has dobro size ones at 3/4 inch which would give me lots of height to spare, but they are only 3/16" thick and the nut I need has to be about .220"

Any help would be appreciated.

Brock, I had to re-do a thicker than normal (for me) nut and didn't have the stock to do it...I thought I'd try something and epoxied 2 together and made the nut...the line was totally invisible! Hey, if it doesn't work out, you are only out a little time...

Man o man,

Frank Ford = Forum Newbie?

Gimme a break.

Brock, what about giving Frank's status a bit of a tweak there? Hmmm? I'm sure nobody will mind and I could do with the reality check.

Cheers,

Yep, I'd say we need a new level...would "Grand Exalted and Revered Luthier Poobah" fit underneath his name?

Regarding the "labels" I think you are right. We need some way to designate the VERY prominent here. I will see what I can do to create an "invitation only" group that will stand outside of the normal "count the posts" system...

the labels don't mean much anyway... except how chatty we are....

Brock -

i did rummage around and found I have a good supply of those big nuts. I
had them specially cut for Dobro replacements - they're a full 1/4" thick,
2-1/8 wide, and just short of 7/8" high. Unbleached bone, so they have a
distinctly vintage look. Lots of folks presume they're fossil ivory because of
the discoloration, but they're jsut dirty bone.

Years ago John Reuter of Roberto-Venn showed me how you can turn bone
into chalk by bleaching it too much. I immediately switched to unbleached
bone to get the hardest and most durable nuts and saddles. . .

Awesome... thank you. I will give you a call on monday and maybe I could buy a couple of those from you.

Sorry I couldn't get there yesterday. Kid "things" came up and burned off my whole day.

Oh....

At first I thought this was a reference to you brock

(please note that this was intended as humor, for those of you who are humor impaired please ignore my statement)

On the same topicI need to find a supplier of bone so I can cut my own sizes, my saddles are about the same size as Ervin uses and it's been a struggle to find them that big.

They are normally about 7/32" wide which is part of the problem....

Cheers

I think you can get them about any size you want from Chrislin (sp) Trading. However, you need to order quite a few as I remember. I bought a bunch back when we did a group order...
