Hi Folks,
I just signed up today and wanted to say hello. I have been repairing guitars in NYC for about 18 years. Two years ago I opened my own shop and have been blessed with over 800 clients. Since I opened about 2000 guitars have crossed my bench, I was very pleasantly suprised. My wife was the one who convinced me to stop working in stores and strike out on my own. She is much smarter than I am. After attending the ASIA Symposium in June I realized what a lovely community we have of luthiers both pro and hobbyists and I am very proud to be a part of it. I finally found this forum and after checking it out for a few days realized how much it has to offer. I want to extend an invitation to anybody who would like to ask me questions about what we all seem so excited about. I also look foward to tapping into the amazing minds that seem to frequent this forum. Well, I have a 1970 Martin D35 that needs a refret and I have procrastinated long enough.
All my respect and well wishes,
               Evan Gluck

Welcome Evan. I used to live in N.Y. and frequented Manny's and all the other big stores on 48th street. Back then Alex guitars was the up and coming star and a man named Kuntz ( can't remember his first name or how to spell it)was a Luthier Giant.

Need a partner...just kidding! Good luck and Welcome!

This was around 1973-1977. I still have one of the original ALEX AXE pickups he was starting to develope. I used to give guitar lessons to one of Alex's staff...he would pay me in strings and pot. Hey it was the 70's what can I say!

Manny's was where I bought my first Tele...jet black, two fender humbuckers, brand new w/the case I think it was $200 or $230...1973 wasn't any mex or squire around yet...I don't know if the jap models were even in production back then.

Welcome, Evan. I'll probably never make it to NY as I have a real phobia of big cities. My little home town is pushing 6000 people and it's too big for me. But if I ever get up there, I'll look you up.

Hey Evan,

If I did meet you at the symposium ... uh well ... I forgot Glad your here on the OLF though.

Learn from your mistakes is one of my mottos! It seems like I am learning lots lately! One thing I did fairly recently is broke one of my own rules. I allowed a "client" to take delivery of a guitar without a case. Since then he moved from Boston to NYC. Recently I got an e-mail from him that the bridge was starting to peel up. (Arghh!) Did it have anything to do with not having a case?? I dunno. The idea of quick climate changes without a case worries me. Regardless the guitar needs to be fixed. I told him to ship it to me ... which of course he can't until he gets a case. He may elect to get it repaired in NYC. (Of course he then has to pay for the repair) Well if he decides for the repair in NYC ... I'll send him you way. If he comes in ... tell him to get a case.

Thanks for all the great responses, it has been a very nice welcome so far. I definitely remember some of you from ASIA. Brad, thanks for the referral, it was 2 dulcimers and a mandolin. One duclimer had a split peghead and the other needed a refret. She seemed very happy. Thanks again. BTW, I am still doing work for Joe Giglio and his 20 million students.

Hi Evan...welcome to the forum. I can't remember if I met you at ASIA, but glad to see you here. Your mention of Manny's and Alex's brings back memories to me as I had spent a lot of time at both back in the 80's. Congratulations on your success.

Hey Anthony, that was fun at the airport, good to hear from you, I wound up hanging out with Cat Fox for a few hours swapping nightmare repair and customer stories . It was a great way to get my head back into business mode for the next day. Stay Well.
