I have a 75 poly finish strat that has been modded, so I want to at least clean up the finish. I was told to use Shellac, but you do see a shadow line. Also, the bass side of the neck has the finish worn off about a half inch down for about 10 inches. It is now black from wear. Any way to clean dirt besides sanding? Then to finish hte strip with what? Any secrets? Thanks

The poly finish on those '70 fenders is positively thick, so you can probably
wetsand down a few .000th to clean up the top coat without affecting
anything. CA works well on poly to fill holes and gaps. To clean up the dirt
from the neck wood try to pad the raw wood with chlorine, clean with
naphta, put some more chlorine, some naphta and so on. Sanding it will lead
to catastrophe in my opinion, the wood fibers might be very soft and you'll
easily change the neck contour. Chances are the dirt's deep in the wood and
it might not be worth the trouble, I think those are character marks and
should be left alone on vintage instruments…
