I'm working on a much abused '79 HD-35 and it seems the neck is finished
in that catalysed finish Martin uses now for its necks. Do you guys know
when Martin stopped using nitro for laquering the necks and started using
their matte finish?

I'm asking this because the Martin Schaller tuners have been overtightened,
screws broken into the wood and so on, it even had a screwed-on thick
plactic pickguard and oh boy what a mess under… Anyway the finish lifted
off under and around the tuners' washers, I'm wicking CA in there to repair
the spots, but I've only seen that happen with the newer finishes and not
with nitro.

I believe that 79 the finish was nitro. A safe test is to take some acetone on a small rag and rub a spot. if it melts or blushes it is nitro if not then probably a catalysed uryethene
