The newest Stewmac accelerator will eat through nitro and other finishes. Erick at Stewmac told me they should have a new mixture soon, but be careful. I had an annoying accident when I received the new stuff sprayed it on some loose frets and watched it chew through the neck finish on a 50's Gibson. Fortunately I caught it in time and the damage was minimal but it could have been a potential catastrophe!

How new/old is this bad "Batch"? I bought a large can (quart) a few months ago but have not sprayed it on any nitro. THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP!!

Hey David,
not too sure of the date of the switch, I would test it under a macine head or on a test board. The effect is immediate and scary If nothing happens you are good to go, but still be careful.

In Stewmacs defense, I received an e-mail from them after my accident confirming the problem. They are working on getting the old stuff back as that was not problematic.They are always a pleasure to deal with.

That's when the Big Kahuna (Lance our modest moderator) electronically "tacks" a post up for an extended period. This probably wouldn't qualify though. But it is noteworthy.

Why in the heck do you use accelerator? With thin, med, and thick, can't you use any of these to increase/decrease speed?

Accelerator is very handy if you have numerous slightly loose frets in a row, you just make sure they are as seated as possible run thin superglue underneath them hit it with accelerator and you can start leveling in minutes, this is for a guitar that is not being refretted for whatever reason(usually customer finances). During a refret you can control the size of the fret tang etc. to get a good fit.

I use a good amount of super glue, yet have never had an ounce of accelerator in my shop.

Super glue's plenty quick already <bg>

If I feel the need to speed things up a tad, or to balance the pH on some oily woods(biggest reason for using accelerator), I simply reach for the box of Cow Brand baking soda. Sprinkle or brush in a bit where you're going to use the glue, then gently blow it away. There will be a wee bit left behind, and enough to kick the glue as fast and hard as any accelerator can.

Perfectly safe, both for finishes and your health. Accelerator is usually nasty stuff....

Mario, does this method give you any working time or is it instantaneous?
