I did the same thing a few years back! Nothing like a BRW clock or key chain

Nifty! Where'd you get the clock mechanisms from?

Bob- he's great, slept through the night last night! Thanks for asking

Mattia- Klock-it is one I think, I just did a search. The fit-ups are almost exactly the same size as my watch. I might have initially got my fit-us at a craft shop, then got them from a magazine supplier. I still have about 12 left, and almost as many clocks too.

Robbie- I think a keychain that matches a guitar is a cool thing (Contrary to my what my young padawan learner thought)

By the way, Robbie, congrats on the new DVD! I hope it sells well, and helps tons of people in doing their finishes. That sometimes is a tough area. Terry Stowell38702.7603703704

Thanks Terry on the new DVD. I definitely think it will help people with their finishing technique.
Another cool idea ia a pen made from the same wood as their guitar.

Yes I love the pen making idea too. I've never made one, but I'd love to have the stuff to do it. Penn state industries sells it. (now there's a good pen pun!)

I'm interested in your approach to finishing with urethane, have been for a while. I have some other priorities right now, but I will be looking at buying a copy of your video when I have the extra cash.

Our forum is blessed to have you Robbie. You're a gift to so many learning the craft. We appreciate you!

Pens are really easy to make. I have made scores of them. I do a little turning too - when I am frustrated with guitars I throw a hunk of wood on the lathe and chip away....

Not much you can't get at woodcraft I suppose. For the price of a little lathe, tools and supplies-what, around $4 00 or so to get into it?

Once you have a mini lathe and a couple of basic turning tools pens are about $8 each if you buy the kits at woodcraft.

Hey anyone that wants exotic pen blanks I throw tons of them in the garbage. Just pay for shipping.

SPeaking of pens n' key rings-

BROCK & ROBBIE- can you post some pics of your stuff (scans might work better)

Doug it's surprising what creativity happens in a guys shop huh? I made these by inspiration of seeing some click minis at a gallery and just made up my own designs. The spalted maple ones came out of my father's woodpile. (which was very inspitaional) God just gave me some creative ideas, and there you go.

I love making these things...well..it's been a couple years since I took the time, but it's really a neat little creative package of fun. I like using natural edge burl as the face mount. Just drill a 1.5" shallow hole with a true Forstner bit (not multi-spured) then a standard 1 3/8 hole for the clock insert in the middle of that hole. The mini clock face will fit right into the smooth 1.5" hole in the rough burl face. Lots of creative ways to do this. I get lots of natural edge amboyna burl clock blanks when I cut turning stock.

We now offer custom matched pens to bass or guitar tops also. The pen can be ordered with the top wood and it's cut from the same piece of top wood. It's getting fairly popular.

That's a great idea Larry. I thought the matching wood gift idea would be a really nice conversation starter for the guitar owner. (As well as a nice thing to have, too)

Can you post any pics?

Larry,

BTW I bought a manzanita root at a craft show, but it had a bit of graval "grown into" it, I found as I cut into it and sparks flew!

What are your thoughts/projesct with this root?

Terry, I don't have any clock photos with a linkable URL, but here's a link to the thread that started the matching pens. There's quite a few photos and one of a pen/pencil set made from sappy two-tone amboyna burl near the end.

Gallery Hardwoods pen thread

I've found most Manzanita full of cracks or granite, too. I've gotten frustrated trying to cut even smallpen blanks from them. They're like artichokes....way to little result for the work required. The best use I've seen of the small burls is polished bases to display custom knives or other treasures on. Some manzanite cut from wild fire areas in the Sierra foothills were pretty stable and easy to work with.
