I've got an order for my first maple-necked guitar, so I have a little to learn.

What is the right kind(s?) of maple to use? Where can I get it.

I do a 3-piece neck (heelblock, neck, scarf-jointed headstock) ala Cumpiano, so I'd be looking for a 4x4x3 block for the heel.

Hi Matt,

You can use eastern or western maple. Most recommend using some neck reinforcement on western as it isn't as stable as eastern. I think the figure is generally more impressive though so it makes up for the extra work.

I wouldn't recommend a stacked heel from a cosmetic standpoint.. it won't blend in like a non figured wood does.

John, that's one of the best bursts I'e had the pleasure of staring at.

Matt, if you're still on the hunt I brought in 8 handpicked flamed Euro maple logs in October. The "logs" are flitch cut, kiln dried and we purchase intact. 8/4 and 4/4 mixed to 14' long. I've gone to the Euro maple for white color, straight grain stability and it's actually easier to get than domestic flamed maple (for me). We custom cut from these timbers on order. I sent Lance a photo of these logs to post in the WOOD SHED several days ago along with a Braz back set and a Koa back set, but don't see them up yet. Get in touch if you still have need.
