I ran up to Tim's today to have him help me with a little sanding. I have to say that grizzly 18" wide belt sander is one of the nicest things I have ever seen.

It blows away drum sanders.

I have a so-so Performax 16/32 and thought I was going to upgrade to a larger drum sander.... Now I am going to save my pennies for one of these.... Wow.

Brock that looks a really nice machine, did I understand that you can programme a thickness and it takes care of it ? or have I got this wrong ?

I know a local furniture builder who has the 24" duel belt thickness sander from Grizzly and he does not use the programable height adjustment option anymore as he did use it shortly after he purchased the machine and the bed just kept coming up till it sanded a small hollow in the belt. Well, he just doesn't trust the programable height adjustment anymore, just does it manually, motorized of course, just flicks the switch himself.

Seriously, it looks like an incredible machine, and I'm not the least suprised to hear it's that good. Unfortunately, money and space are lacking to acquire such a wonderful tool. Not to mention dust collection for something like that...

Yes, you just type in the decimal dimensions and just like magic... everything adjusts. Very slick.

It isn't that I didn't believe you... but all I have ever seen in action is a drum sander... sometimes very big, very nice drum sanders... but still a drum sander. I just figured it was "like" a bigger nicer drum sander...

The cool part is that as the wood is going through the sander I just type in the next dimension on the keypad and as soon as the wood exits the belt I hit the enter button and it auto indexes to the next cut dimension. It is so cool and FAST. I have been running a lot of oily [dark purple] EIR through it and not even a HINT of gunk building up on the belt.

Brock asked if I had much tweaking to do when I got the sander. This is the first power tool I have ever owned that came set up perfect out of the crate. We measured the wood of Brock's after we sanded it and it was within .002" on all four corners. This wood came right off the rubber conveyer belt and wasn't run on a platten. The wood I run on plattens comes out within .000" on all four corners which just amazes me.

The only draw back is I have to install new electrical service to the shop. I have to shut off most of my lights, fans, radio, etc... in order to start this beast up. It pulls 60 amps on start up and drops back to around 20 when it's runnning. If I take a .025" cut it will draw around 25 amps and a .035" cut will draw 30 amps.

Ouch! Add the dust collector and compressor at the same time, and that is a big, big draw on any residential circuit. Did your utility bill take a big hit, too? Must have....

Brock - yea it is...I was blown away too...some things you just have to see...

Tim - I realy feel bad that you had to re-wire in order to run this machine. I'll gladly take it off your hands for the cost of shipping ( which is a lot, I know.) I wouldn't want you to get used to that puppy and then let it rust in the corner for lack of amperage.
