I have a 51 Epiphone Regent in natural that needs a neck reset. I have only done one, and that was not alone. I did a 1950 Gretsch New Yorker with a great repair guy at the Gibson Custom shop during a fantasy Camp. Brought it down with me.

This one I want to be careful with (and I have another to do). So I am wary about pulling the fret, but when I do I want to make sure I am in the right spot-- then do it right. Anybody want to share their thoughts/techniques would be greatly appreciated as I know there are some tricks not to screw up. I have read a few articles on it. Thanks again.

Check Frank Fords www.frets.com site - I am pretty sure there are great photos and such for removing a neck. Cant tell from your photos, but doesnt thr neck extension on this guitar float (it is an archtop right ??) If so, then you will likley need to steam the joint from the bottom, ie, thru the heel cap (or is that already missing - even better, nothing to ruin there trying to get it off)

If the FB extension is glued down then remove the first fret thats over the body, and drill a at a slight angle towards the neck heel - you should easily find the cavity to inject steam into (assuming there is one). One of my students and I took the neck off an old Canadian made Hensall parlour guitar, and the dovetail was very shallow, like 5/16 inch, and there was no space between it and the neck block for steam anyway. We essentially broke it out, but got lucky, it came out clean.

You might want to pick up a copy of Dan Erlewine's Neck Reset video. I found it to be very helpful.

YEs the Board is floating over the body. So if that is the case do you always go through the heel? I would much rather do that for sure, but then do I drill at an angle upwards, I assume. I assume it is not good if drill through the dovetail as steam will go in the body. Do you protect teh body finish somehow?

Thanks

I havent done this type of neck removal (floating FB), but I would think you have to drill up at an angle, in order to get thru the dovetail and into the gap between it and the neck block. Unless there is another gap between the block and the guitar internals, steam shouldnt get into the guitar itself. But you will more than likely get some exiting the neck around the heel joint as it loosens - it has to get out somewhere after all. Clean that up as you see it with a cloth. You may also get some finish blushing from the steam, but I find you can polish and buff that off post neck removal.TonyKarol38719.5500231481
