Did anyone see the review by John Calkin in American Luthierie on Robbie's Steel String DVD? For all the people who currently own the DVD what is your opinion of the review? Is it right on, or way off?

No there is not a link to it. You have to be a member of GAL and then you would have received the magazine. I don't even think you can purchase issue #84 yet unless you are a member. I can bring it next time we hook up so you can see it.

Tracy,

Maybe just parphrase the review and see what people have to say. I have it but not with me! Just today I received Robbie's Classical instruction video.

Thanks

Shane

I have the classical video. While not perfect, it does beginning luthiers a great service imho. It is very clear, to the point and his explanations are first rate. What I think it could use in future editions are a beginning overview of the entire process and an accompanying workbook with chapter notes and some of the pics from the video but with plenty of room for your own notes as you build your first guitar.

I have Robbie's French Polish video on order. If I didn't like the first, I wouldn't have ordered the other.

just my 2 cents.

Along with general praise, John Caklin has a few criticisms based on some of Robbie's unique methods.

-His "semi-weird" binding method

-His use of glue in addition to nuts and bolts for the m/t neck

-shaping the neck after attaching to the body and lack of detail in laying out the neck shaping

As John explains it, it is a difference in techniques only. His concerns are the DVDs suitability to beginners with LMI using it as a companion to their kits.

I think it is a fair assessment. I really like the DVD, but like all instructions, I pick and choose techniques that work well for me.
