I exhibited at a large "guitar show" last weekend. It was mostly electrics or shall I say 99.999% electrics. I walked around prior to the opening and found only one other hand builder there and thought to myself, man we have got it made today! WRONG. As soon as the doors opened it was a competition as to who's amp was THE loudest and then there were bass players trying out guitars, da, da, da, da, da, da... give me a break. My head was throbbing in a matter of a few hours. I couldn't even hear myself think let alone hear an acoustic guitar. It was more like a giant flea market or garage sale for all things electric. We had a lot of traffic at our tables, met a bunch of wonderful people and orders usually come back to you after the show so we will see what develops. Needless to say, we learn lessons the hard way in life and this was a valuable one for us. Just color me PINK |
The Columbus show?
Yep, but ... the term show has a different connotation to me after attending HB. |

Tim, How about "debacle"? (def. #4) Seems appropriate from what you reported. Steve |

I'd say "debandade" would also be a good one! ![]() |

That is hilarious Tim. I found your story about loud amps and bass players most excellent and evocative... |

In my experience, that is the way it usually is at "guitar shows", unless they are billed as or meant to be acoustic shows. These kinds of shows usually draw the traders and wheeler-dealer types who would put a good used car salesman to shame. They wait at the door for the doors to open...so they can jump right on anyone who walks in the door with an old-looking case, so that they can wrangle whatever he brought to sell out of him for as little as possible. And loud? Yeah, they are loud. If you're a luthier showing your stuff, you don't get a lot of respect. They want the name brand guitars, and old stuff. Your guitars, Tim, are worthy of a better kind of show, like I imagine Healdsburg would be. |
