I tape the pieces together tightly & tape them to the side with any old masking tape that's handy.
After ruining a nice set of figured maple bindings... I wrap the bindings in foil seperately, to prevent colour bleeding from one wood into the other.
No reason not to get your side purflings into the act at the same time.
And... make sure you remove all the tape residue soon after bending. If it sits around for a while it gets very difficult to remove.
