My buddy told me about this forum and I decided to join. I'm a beginner having recently completed my first acoustic. It turned out better than I expected and now all I can think about is the next one.
My uncle has been playing guitar for about 50 years and has always been a big Gene Autry fan. I recently learned that his was the first D45 made by Martin and my uncle asked me to build one for him. I haven't found any specs on the guitar yet except that it is a dreadnought with 12 frets to the body. I'm wondering if the body is actually the same size as a dreadnought or closer to a OM. Anybody have any info on the guitar or where I might find some? Thank you, Kevin

Hi Kevin

The guitar you are talking about is one of my favorites.
the body is a 12 fret dred model, which is longer than a 14 fret dred but the same depth. No where near an OM at all.

I use a form I got from one of our forum members, John Hall, who has a great selection of the various Martin sizes. give him a shout.

The Gene Autry signature Martin with its carmel colored brazilian rosewood is to die for.

Roy also played an OM-sized Martin in his younger day. It has been reissued this year by Martin in BRW. Another guitar to live for:

The first Gen Aurty is in the Martin Museum and it had the first honor of the D45 (1933). The guitar is infact a 12 fret dred. The specs are 1 11/16 at the nut and 2 1/8 at the 12th fret. The top has a pearl rosette and the top pearl ( paua ) is .064 on the rim and .045 of the sides with .065 on the back. the pearl is sandwiched between the binding ( white b/w/b/pearl/b/w/b. The guitar is a long scale 25.4 it has a body length of 20 15/16 upper body 11 1/2 lower 15 5/8.
The bridge will have an 8 point snowflake . Ebony bridge and board with adi top and BRW side.

Thanks so much for the info. It will be quite a task for me with my limited experience but there is no rush on it.
OLF can count on me with a number of questions when I do begin working on it.
Thanks again, Kevin

Thanks. Yes I'm hooked. I'm nothing to write home about where my playing ability is concerned which is fine because I just enjoy playing. I wished I would have thought about building them when I was 20. Better late than never.
