So how long do all you let your guitars sit between when the strings first go on and when you let it leave your shop? I’m really interested to hear from you guys who are turning out guitars on a regular basis. What is your setup schedule? Do you let the guitar sit for a while with strings on it before you do your final setup? It seems like that would be the best thing to do.

It looks like this year I am going to be turning out guitars on a much more regular basis than I have done in the past. I am trying to organize my time better so that I can get thing flowing through my little shop more efficiently. Hearing what some of you other guys do would be really helpful. Thanks.

That helps a bit. I am hoping to build 10-15 guitars this year. I am building guitars for customers and some that will go to different stores. The guitars can't be played for 2-3 months as they would probably not be in new condition after that. And I simple don't have that much time to play. Also some of my customers are not close enough to bring that guitar back after a few weeks. So I would like them to be going out of here properly setup.

I do the whole set-up one day. Then I play it off and on for a few more
days, and then tweak as needed before shipping out to the customer.
Sometimes things change sometimes not, but it is best to make sure
before sending it out the door!

I know that Martin say they keep the guitars for 14 days after set up, an then do a final check before they ship them.

That's interesting. Now that you mention it, I have noticed that my guitars seem to drop in pitch for more like 3-4 weeks after first being strung up before they settle and stay in tune from day to day. It's nothing dramatic, and less each day of this first period, but the drop in pitch is quite noticeable compared an older guitar with a new set of strings, say.

These ideas are along the line of what I have been thinking. Let the guitar sit for a week or so with cheap strings and then do the setup. Let it sit a while longer and then ship it out. I think I'll give it a try. I just came in from gluing a neck onto a body so I should have one to try this idea on in a few days. Thanks guys
