A final update to you guys (and Lance's daughter) on the saga of the Stewart MacDonald circle cutter, I know you’ve all been on the edge of your seats waiting to find out what develops.

Last night, about 8pm, I was just sitting down to read a turgid academic paper, on new developments in deep borehole induced gamma ray logging, when the phone rang. On the other end was a man from Stew Mac! He had phoned transatlantic to discuss the circle cutter. We had a very lengthy conversation (he said that they can’t trace my E-mails though my system has not had any mail returned undelivered) but had seen the thread on OLF and didn’t want a disgruntled customer.

After a long and very good natured discussion on the importance of trickle down internal communications, customer service and marketing, out of the blue he offered to send me one of the new circle cutters as a good will gesture! I offered to return the other one, but he said to keep it.

So, normality is resumed, Stew Mac came through with great service, all’s well with the world, and Brian Goodman is sending me some killer Cuban. (Just thought I’d throw that in.)

I have never, ever heard of a Stew Mac customer service issue that was not resolved with the luthier beaming from ear to ear.

No Martin, I'm a deep crustal structure man, but one of the post grads I'm supervising is doing some work on the exceptionally uninteresting sedimentary stuff. I think they should just scrape all the sediments off so that we can get down to the more interesting basement rocks!

A big "attaboy" to Stew-Mac! Well done!

I have had a real strange problem with Stewmac recently but they have been really good at trying to work it out. I had ordered some stuff from them including some router bits and when the Parcel arrived one corner was ripped open (looked like it had been dropped.) I opened the parcel up and the router bits were missing, The paper bag that the bits had been in was in the box but it had been torn open, like someone had reached in through the little hole and pulled out what they could get. I figured I would have to go after Canada Post to fight it out withy them so I called Stew Mac and told them what happened to get confirmation stuff that it was sent. They said no problem, we'll send new ones no charge. Wow, it wasn't there fault someone stolee he stuff. Since I am in Canada I asked them to make sure they wrote "Warenty Replacement Parts, No Charge" on the customs form which they said they would. Pleasent and chereful. Well, wheen the stuff arrived they had written "Defective" on the the customs form which meant I had to pay $26 for Taxes again. I got home and strated calling them right away to complain and they were apologetic and offered to reimburse me the full amount that Canada Customs collected. Again great service, I expected them to apologise and say it wouldn't happen again. Well, I was opening the box as I spoke to them and dumped out the contents to discover that instead of The Binding router bit there was an arch Top Bridge in there. Again, no problem, we'll send a new bit but keep the Bridge. Stew Mac is probably the best customer service I have ever seen.

Now you really can dedicate that first cutter to the Railich rose.

As long as you leave the top meter or two of the loose stuff - that's the only part that interests me (unless tsunamigenic deformations are involved)

Great news Colin. The only problem I have is that when they come through in a situation like this I tend to go and spend more money with them. Good service is its own reward.

WOW! I read that book last week! What a read! I especially liked where at the end the hero jumps out of the helicopter with nothing but his trench coat as a parachute and lands in the river within sight of the basilica...

OOps! That was a different book, wasn't it?

I AM reading a very good book on the geology of the Yellowstone region though. That should count for something, shouldn't it?
