O.K. My name is Alain Desforges and I'm a guitar building junkie. I was born and raised around Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I got the woodworking bug from my dad, who built cabinets as a second source of income.
   I've been playing guitar for 16 years. It was just when I started enquiering about buying a custom made guitar that I decided to fusion the two interests together. I figured for the price of one guitar I could easily buy all the tools required. (Here I imagine a collective knowing chuckle from the forum...)
   So in the first pic. I have my latest bundle of joy in my hands, Katya (who is going on 9 months now, she was about 3 months old in the pic). The second is of my oldest, Zachary who's going on 5.

Bruce, that's not so much a door lock as a 'keep the door shut' jig!    We live in a very quiet and remote area were you don't have to be worried about leaving your doors unlocked...

Alain, I recognized your jig-building prowess immediately when I viewed that locking system. Incredible, reminds me of one my grandpappy had on the outhouse! I used to love reading those Sears-Roebuck catalogs in there.

Allright, here's mine:

I was born in 1963 in Indianapolis, Indiana, but grew up mostly in a small town in northern Connecticut. My childhood passions were drawing, crafts (marionette making, for example), music, reading, writing, and communing with nature.

I escaped teenage wasteland by going to Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan for my last two years of high school, where I studied creative writing, ceramics, and theater, AND bought my first guitar for $10 from the roommate of a guy who'd just gotten booted from the school after falling down drunk on top of the guitar - I repaired it with duct tape. Sounded great, man.

From there I went to the University of Michigan where I studied music (guitar, percussion, voice, composition), theater, and creative writing. Hung out in Ann Arbor for 11 years after graduating, teaching music both privately and at the University, doing theater and music around town, making ceramic drums, as well as working various other jobs from making tofu to cooking at the famous Del Rio bar, and living in big houses full of hippies.

Moved to Ithaca, New York in 1997 and started life anew. Married the most wonderful woman in the world, had a daughter (the most wonderful little girl in the world), bought land in the country, built a house, planted a big garden and a bunch of fruit trees (chickens and goats soon to follow), and finally made up my mind to pursue a dream I'd had for a long time - designing and building guitars. Music-making these days is pretty constant, but mostly around the house, and more singing than anything. I pick up and play a guitar whenever I can, write a song now and then, gig very occasionally, and play djembe for the Dances of Universal Peace.   But most of my time goes into my family and community, our budding homestead, and learning this amazing art of guitar making.
