I just bought this headband magnifying loupes. It comes with a light that is pretty worthless, but the lenses are great for simple plastic lenses. What I like about it, is that it comes with 4 different lenses for greater mag, shorter focal length to less mag, longer focal length. They fairly comfortable. The other type commonly used, grey band, is only one lens. I just inlayed a rosette and a fingerboard and I COULD SEE!!!!!!!!! SO MUCH better than my reading glasses. http://www.sciplus.com/singleItem.cfm?terms=8731&cartLogFrom =Search They were $29.95 at the above site. Perfect for us OLD FARTS!!!! I might be younger than some of you but my eyes don't act like it. |

Andy, Jeweler's supply houses will have a variety of grades, styles and powers for those who need a choice. With some of the better known brands you can buy the basic magnifier and then buy an auxilliary loop for the right or left eye (whichever is dominant). I only mention it because of the versatility afforded. We all be gettin' older! My dentist wants me to buy some of the custom made optics he uses. He swears by them. After seeing the price, I now understand why he charges what he does! ![]() Regards, Steve PS The ones I mentioned are very affordable |

Andy, I got a similar item at Harbor Freight about a year ago. It was cheap, $9.00, and plastic with no light. But the thing sure does work well. I can actually see what I am doing. |
...any opinions on the basic Optivisor that seems to be grafted to Dan Erlewine's forehead?
I have one, and I find it to be very uncomfortable. It feels heavy after wearing it for a few minutes, and the fairly stiff plastic headband trys to shape your skull to its own configuration, instead of the other way around. The lens itself is too small, and tends to distort both the image and, strangely, colors. Also, the visor tightening/loosening mechanism is a couple of plastic knobs situated right at your temples--if you have ANY hair there over, say, a quarter-inch long, you'll pull it whenever you try to adjust those knobs! The alternative posted above looks pretty good--bigger lenses; lighter; more comfortable--but I'd be very concerned about its lack of adequate eye protection. Is there anyone who hasn't reached for his Dremel for some purpose while using one of these types of magnifiers? If you've got some low-bulk safety glasses, they might be okay under the above model, but it's something to consider before buying. |
