I ordered a mahogany OM kit from LMI, and it arrived yesterday, so I'm about to get started on serial number 1. I'm excited, but I have a busy weekend coming up, so I won't get much done right away. I need to let the idea that I'm really going to do this sink in a little before I start, anyway. I'm going to build a guitar! Woot! |

Woohoo John! Good for you. My first was a RW OM from LMI. You're in for a great ride. You won't forget the moment when you first bring the strings up to tension, it doesn't fall apart, and it makes music. Hope you have some books -- Cumpiano, for example -- to go with Robbie O'Brien's excellent DVD that comes with the kit. |

So have you jumped all the way in and maxed out your cards on wood for future builds? I finished two kits from Martin, a d and om from John Hall, and I am ready to jump in to my first from scratch. Lets us know how it turns out! |

John!!!If you have opened the box, the first thing you need to do is join a 12 step program today!!! You are now addicted to the wood
Now for a real tip.  This might not seem real important, but without a doubt the best piece of advice I can give you John, is keep a detailed daily journal. List every thing you do. Describe all difficulties you run into and their resolutions. All success no mater how small. All thoughts you have in the beginning of a work session, the main thoughts in the middle of a work session and all thoughts you have at the end of the work session. This time spent on the journal will slow you down a bit, but that is almost always a good thing. The insight the journal will store for future reference is priceless worth every second you spent on it.

I'm putting the finish on my first. No.1 never got any nitro, but it is now. I learned how to finish on numbers 2 through 5. Believe me, finishing really is, "THE SECOND HALF" of building a guitar. Good luck with your first. Hey we'll look at anything. Takes some pics and toss them up here. Go man Go! Bitten, nah, infected is a more appropriate term, and now, you are a "Carrier". |

Good luck with your first build John, Baby steps are the 2 words that are haunting me since i joined the OLF, sometimes you'll even have to walk out of the shop in a hurry but remember that we're here for support through it all!

Cool John! My first experience was with an LMI kit - A great way to learn! What Michael said about keeping a journal is spot on. I've learned so much just going back and reading my notes. Document successes AND failures, both provide opportunities to learn and make the next one better. (Don't kid yourself, there WILL be a next one! )
