What is next for you?

With my 12 fret Dread coming to a close it got me thinking what do I do next?
And what are all of you doing (next)?
I know with NewPort on the horizion there must be some great guitars brewing.

For me, I have 4 cooking right now that I hope to have finished sometime this summer or fall.

1. Italian Ziricote cutaway that I have started, Rims done, top and rosette done, back done.
2. Cedar mahogany (also have a good start on it)
Top braced, sides bent, back braced.
3. LS redwood Cocobolo OM (plates joined)
4. LS redwood 5A Koa Om (plates joined) but thats all.

So, what I plan to do is bring all 4 guitars to the same build stage, and try to complete each step on all 4 before going on to the next step.

What do you all have on the burner?

Lance..another LS redwood coco OM
Wasn't this your favorite????

I am working on a Coco/Lutz SJ 12 string. (for my music teacher)
Then an all Koa OM
After that...I have that nice AAAAA Koa that I am debating what top.
I didn't think about using redwood like Lance is, but I have 2 sets from the
Zootman. It was thinking of a Lutz set I have or maybe the only Adi set I
have.

After the Qlt'd Sapele/Quilt'd Maple center wedge back and Curly Redwood top slimline Sj cutaway I think a Curly Nara/BC Sitka SJ. cutaway is next on the agenda That or Qlt'd Maple/Qlt'd Sapele center wedge back and straight grain redwood top. But I think I will put this one off till fall.

Right now the Slimline is a priority as to my surprise it was sold last week. It should rap up in about 60 day counting finish.

At the same time I am trying to knock out Gibson Advanced Jumbo plans for a Project that Brock, Lance and I have going, Other than the Thinline SJ this is priority #1

I guess this is a good time to mention to John How and Don Williams that I have still yet to see the folk guitar plans I would like to have them in the Library of plans by the end of the summer.

I expect the Build #2 to show up for finish Late Spring or early summer, but It should not affect build schedule at all.

I'm Retired from building...and it feels good.

But I have several in the works that I should probably finish just for the heck of it.   I'm also planning to build myself a BRW/Addy OO, and a Taz Blackwood/redwood Size 5. Oh, and another BRW/Addy OO too for something else, and a EI/Sitka dread for yet something else.

I'm at a standstill lately do to a series of nasty projects at work the last several months...

This is my #1 in progress, sitka/cocobolo parlor, started Christmas Eve 2004 (just to make everyone else feel better about their own rate of progress :).


This is my #2, that I started for the buildoff contest on the luthiersforum, which ends May 1, and I'm pretty sure I won't be done in time which is okay. It's a 99cent top from Mario the luthiersforum guy, and "opportunity grade" E.I. rosewood B&S. Started this in May or June last year, I think.


Pretty much at the same place on both, necks scarfed and stacked, boxes are closed and need all the trim work. So hopefully things will die down at work soon so I can get back on them.

Just finished an all Mahogany LG (roughly Grand Concert size). Putting the finishing touches on a Myrtle/sitka LG. Sides bend on a Madrose/sitka SIG and will start on two archtops next week for the Montreal show.

I have alot of jigs and molds to build, tables and workspaces to prep, and tools to refurbish and acquire yet,
I just wanna get building but I am determined to get the workshop tight before I start!
I am jealous of everyone in the world that has (a) project/s actually underway, but Im trying to have fun w/the organization and preparation stage.
Have fun with it guys.

I have a partial refret on a Dearmond Gumby looking green guitar, a setup tutorial I am teaching, a fretless acoustic fretboard leveling, Paul Bollenbeck's Guild arch top is coming in for some minor fretwork, and a possible visit from our own OLF member J.J. Donahue who called me this morning as he is in NYC for a visit. It would be nice to meet him. This all will be done today NY is insane sometimes, tomorrow will be similar and the next day and the next.....

Have four dreads going - two almost done, two ready for backs and tops. Next is an F5 style mando; first one from scratch - flamed maple B/S and Sitka top.

Then... More dreads...

Wow Jon, thats some of the nicest coco I've seen! Where did you get that?

I have 3 projects going on, one is a 16.5" Baritone in honduras mahogany and european spruce. Plates joined and abalone backstrip inlayed.

No 2 is a bowlback 6 course lute copy dated 1530, euro/braz. Top bowl and neck ready for assembly tomorrow. I'll throw in a pic:



No3 is a 15" steelstring in Italian/braz. Neck and body waiting for laquer to harden enough for sanding and buffing. I'll throw in a pic here too just to tease:

I'm going to some vintage stuff. I've been contemplating it for awhile and I've decided on a 00 probably with 42 style trim. I just got the top bracing pattern from a 1929 00-42, so that's a good start. I've made the mold and the bending form and I've got a set of cocobolo and a hybrid top that I think will be perfect.

I'm undecided on the second vintage model. Possibly an OM or maybe an L-00. This should be fun. It's a departure for me and I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks, I got that when I was out in N. Cal. taking Harry Fleishman's class, took a little trip up to Allied to spend way too much money on one of the days off. The rest of the stack of coco that they had didn't look anything like it, it was sort of an oddball. That set was just barely big enough for the O-size, so they gave me a decent discount. I kind of regret using it for my first, though it is turning out nicely. After this one, I'm going to work on using up the rest of my stash of "opportunity grade" rosewood from Allied's sale when they were $18 a set at qty=10, before I return to the nicer stuff in my stash.

Lars, that looks really nice! Is that the Brazillian you got from a local furniture factory or some such, or am I confusing you with someone else...? Beautiful wood all the same, and that lute; oh boy!

I'm building 2 more SJ's at the moment; one bubinga / Italian Spruce, the other coco / Italian. I have to finish a red F5 mandolin (almost there) and an A5 is half way done. After that is a koa / Italian baritone for a local player that I have not started yet, and a Ziricote / red spruce 000 12 fret for ME! (Somewhere in there I will become the father of another daughter and I'm supposed to be fixing up this ol' house too...)

Yes Arnt, thats right. Actually, when calculating on it i paid like $30 for this set(and thats witout the various briges, fingerboards etc that I got out from that particular plank)

Wow, sounds like you have a couple of very nice guitars going on! I'd love to see your work some time. Do you know that there is an acoustic guitar festival outside gothenburg? Last year was the first time and it was great, we were like 40 exhibitors, and there were workshops going on all days and concerts all nights... If you have the possibility, you should really go there. Its Micke Sanden who is the one that arrange the whole thing. http://www.nordicguitarfestival.com/
I probably wont be able to go there this year since I'll be in the US over the summer.
