okay here is the deal, I got these bones for Kevin, turns out he'd already raided a PetSmart and cleaned them out. So, since I'm good on bones I'll pass these along to you remote luthiers who want to try cutting a little bone for special sizes or standard either.

Also, today I got a haircut and Kosha had saved up these four ounce bottles for hide glue. I can get more and want to pass these along as well for free just so you can try hide glue if you haven't, or a small applicator bottle like Mario suggests. It's messy as all get out but you get done quick! Wipe up with a clean rag, and heck, Mario sometimes follows up with a hairdryer to keep things copacetic.

Here is the deal, one large bone is 3.99, one small is 2.99, and I'll toss in two bottles one clear, one translucent. That's seven bucks my cost plus a little postage, whatever that is for that.

I'll have three of package one.

Then there will be one of package two, which will include the two largest bones and one large bone, all three are 3.99, plust the two free hide glue reuseable bottles, so this one is 12 bucks plus postage.

Just speak up on the forum and dibs what you want, first come first served. I'll send these out first class or priority, whichever makes sense. bdBruce Dickey38819.4588541667

What is messy about it?

Errr, this luthier. Maybe I made my hide glue a wee bit too much like hot maple syrup. Maybe I'll go for a mixture more like STP next time.

Yup. If you tip the bottle and your glue runs out, it's too thin. Way too thin...., and weak.

Mine won't run out on it's own, barely. Think Titebond thickness....

Thanks for thinking of me Bruce! Like I said in my PM to you, these bones can yield a pretty impressive number of nice saddle or nut blanks and cut really nicely on the band saw.

With the price of good quality bone blanks for nuts or saddles being what tey are, these are a great alternative. Also, i like leaving my blanks a little over sized and then fit them as I need them.

With repairs they can give you a little thicker blank in case you get a guitar with a badly worn slot that needs to be widened a bit. The beauty is that you can fit a blank to provide a nice tight fit and good compensation or intonation surface.

I picked up all that the Petsmart had on their shelf when I went in. They probably thought i had a houseful of puppies at home.

Thanks again,
Kevin Gallagher/Omega Guitars

Hey Bruce,
Can I buy one of the big bones from you? I need an oversized saddle for the bouzouki I'm building and not sure I will find one. May as well make it myself! Thanks!

Just in case any of you are not aware, the resources page has a link to Chrislin Trading. They have very good prices on very nice bone and will cut to any size you want.

another case of the OLF to the rescue. I try to read every post, I almost stopped early in this case. I don't need the bones, and I already use HHG bottles about the same size, but my glue WILL run out. Think titebond. WOW my techniques take a step forward one more time. Thanks Mario. Some day all of this will come together and I will be a luthier, not just a wannabe..

2 bones for $7 my cost (I have three sets boxed) These boxes contain one small 2.99, one medium size bone 3.99

or

3 bones for $12 my cost (I have one set boxed) This box contains the two largest bones in the pics and one medium size, all cost 3.99 each in this box. The used bottles are free.

Word of Caution, test the bottles first. I've been using these for a while but discovered there is one type of activator that you just can't clean out of the bottles and reacts with the hide glue. Had a batch that was wrecked and didn't know it till I used it on a guitar. Glue was so brittle it crumbled. I also use these bottles for my Shelac, alcohol, oil etc for french polishing, they're great.

Somebody might want to consider Lee Valley's dripless glue bottle, it is pretty thick to support the heat at 140 dg, has different size tips and is big enough to have bolts in them, a little more expensive but worth every penny, just rinse and reuse!

Here's the link

Dripless Glue Bottle

This dripless glue dispenser is ideal for smaller-scale work. With a gentle squeeze of the bottle, glue is forced through a channel at the bottom of the airtight reservoir and up the spout. This displacement creates a vacuum in the reservoir that siphons excess glue from the spout as you ease your grip, preventing drips.

The 4 oz bottle is supplied with two trimmable nozzles, flat for dispensing a strip of adhesive and conical for beads. The included nozzle cap stores on the lid when not in use.

A replacement set of nozzles and caps (two of each) is available separately.

An efficient dispenser.

Arvey, these bottles were rinsed until all bubbles disappeared, and I've had no trouble using them. As for the bones, they are very good quality. You might still give them a bath in denatured alcohol to rid any last bit of fat, for longevity sake.

Just thought someone might wish to try them, thanks for all other suggestions.

No biggie Serge. Just thought I'd pass these along if anyone wanted to try it. One thing at least I'm reformulating my water to glue ration like Mike to mirror Mario's. That was worth the effort for the thread by itself.....

Someone expressed an interest in the big bone pictured, well, actually the smaller bones really have more meaty structure per size. I'd say you'd get as much usable stock from the small or medium, as you would from the larger, curvy big bone, which is thinner and curved. PM me.

Don't get me wrong bruce I am totally behind using these types of bottles and have been doing so for years, It was only one type of bottle that I had problems with and no matter what I did what ever chemicle caused the problem couldn't e got rid off. I ussually wash the bottles well and then soak them in alcohol before using.

Richard, that must have been the turbocurl that some hairdressers use. I think you have to carry a high explosives license in addition to a regular hairdressers license to be able to get that stuff! This is the more generic, yet still high class, Matrix Brand. Not Turbocurl!

I 'aven't a clue to tell you the truth, I tried both of these and have used out of both set and neutralize and mine is working. If you find out what that was let us know. I'm with you though, if you have a place to get virgin bottles that'd be the way to go. I'd like to try some two ounce and even one ounce bottles, but they might not stand up as nicely in my hotpot as do the four ounce version? Thanks for the warning.

Nice thing about the free bottles is they are free, I just throw them out when they start getting old rather than worrying about cleanning. Your offer is a good one for anyone looking though.
