Hi Folks,

I have just stumbled across a few Adjustable Horizontal Toggle Clamps, 198 of them in fact These are good quality clamps made in England by Brauer, 188 of them are rated at 150kg and the other 10 are rated at 250kg.

Now, other than selling some on ebay to recoup my cost, and then making a few of the more obvious jigs, how would you guys suggest I put these to good use around the work shop?

I know I will need about 25 a piece to hold my kids steady while I am out in the shed but that only accounts for 50, lets say another 3 of the big suckers to clamp the wifes tongue to the dining table when she starts at me for waisting my moola on 198 toggle clamps.....Hmmm so where do we go from here amigos?

As a guitar builder, what useful jigs would you build if you were in my shoes? Which I might add are now held in place with several toggle clamps since I broke my laces carrying the toggle clamp box

I hope you never fall in a lake while carrying that much metal, you'd drown for sure!

Usage? Molds, templade holders for profile routing but that many in one shop, you might want to consider a group buy from us!

I'm not that silly Serge, I would never have enough clamps to holder her tight enough to prevent her from getting me back, she always wins Happy Easter to you mate and to all the rest of the OLF clan to.

Stumbled over indeed! With a pile that size, I'm surprised you didn't break a leg! Just put 'em out in the shop, uses will come to you! Trust me!

Kim, if you are looking to unload some of them, I'd be in for some. Drop me a PM if you are interested.
Otherwise, jigs, jigs and more jigs. I think just about every jig in my shop has a toggle clamp on it.

Yes, you hit the motherlode on toggle clamps. They're fantastic for all kinds of jig making. There's really no end to what you can do with them...

Guys, Kim is in Western Australia, the shipping to North America would cost more than the clamps are worth.

I, on the other hand, am on the east coast of Australia and would be happy to take a bunch of those off your hands, Kim .

Guys without looking into it very much at all (read google "Brauer Toggle Clamps" 1st or 2nd results page), you can buy these brand new in the USA for $8.50 each, see HERE although this site list the H150B2 @ 110 lb holding force the Brauer Site list them at 150 daN, what ever the heck that is, and to add to the confusion, the Australian site for RS Components list them at 150 KG.

Anyway my point is that the economics are just not there to ship these to the USA, if you check the Australian site above, you will see that these things sell for $31.50au each over here before GST (add 10%). So if your are familiar with the term "Shipping cole to Newcastle" it applies here.

Your new price is cheaper than our secondhand price, and that is just the nature of things when you live in a country that attempts to compete in a global market place when it's sum total GDP contributes less than 1% to the planets total economy...in other words, we, Australia, are the little guy, and the little guy always gets screwed .

I'm not trying to be a tight wad with my clamps here, I really did just want a few good ideas for jigs where these things would be handy, maybe a few images of what you have used then for. This will help me decide how many I should keep for myself, because with a replacement cost of $31.50 Au each, I would hate to sell them off cheap and then have to buy just 1 new any time in the future.

I just thought that once I had a good indication of how many I should hang onto for myself, I could move the rest on ebay to the locals for a fair price and recoup some of my cost before SWMBO starts look'in at me like I shat in her shoes again

Before I do that however, I will of course contact my OLF brothers Paul, and Craig on the East coast of the island and make them a much fairer offer than I would the UN-OLFiliated rabble on ebay .

So, back to the question I posed before being set upon like a lonely chip (read french fry) thrown among a pack of hungry sea gulls I bought these thing to make jigs, and want to use as many as I can cause I like jigs. So, what Jigs have you got were you are using these things? Anything clever and helpful you can pass on? Images are great, so please share the knowledge.

And Paul Woolson, just to give us all an idea of the value of these things, how many toggle clamps do you have in your shop today? Any Pics?

I kind of knew it would come to this Kim, sorry for acting like a vulpture bud, i'm guilty as can be about it, please forget about my asking to be part of that!

Now if i can be of any help, BobC uses them in our tools and jigs section for pattern routing of the braces over a router table to hold them down.
Some people use them to close the body mold.

I'll let the others give you more advice and pics!

Hey Kim,

Just look in the jigs section and Sylvan Wells site for some good ideas. I would use them to router jigs for doing bridge and headplate shapes. You know, if it was me and I could afford it, I would keep them all! But I am tool junky but as you point out, they aren't going to get any cheaper and sometimes looking at a hold down like that just gives you more jig ideas.

This is a *very* random idea, but what about building some sort of go-
bar replacement rig? You would have a top deck atop which the clamps
would be mounted. The "rod" on the clamp pad would have to be
extended a couple of feet and would go through the top deck towards the
bottom. They'd be positioned in critical locations to clamp down on
braces like go-bars would, but these would be easier to use because you
just throw the toggle lever and you're clamped.

I have no idea if that would work at all, but you're the one who brought
home 200 of the things!
