Okay, this is way off topic, but... I need some coaching from one of you outboard mechanics. Here is the deal, the horn on the controls is squawking incessantly while the engine is running. This boat has sat and sat and sat and sat, with the rats, no kidding. I got it from my mom after dad passed a couple years back. We repaired all the wiring where the rats stripped the insulation away. So, we go to use it and the tilt and trim won't go up or down. 1987 model Johnson 40 HP, electric start with T/T. Okay the mechanic says that'll be $350 for a new T/T motor and a $100 for install. I had him install a new impeller in the lower unit, and brought it home. After fueling anew for this season, the motor is running nicely, but the horn is buzzing it's head off. I don't trust the oil injection system, which is still hooked up. Know nothing about it, so to be safe, I'm adding oil to the gas as we used to do. I have tons of smoke, so it's probably actually working? Okay, thanks if any of you can offer any advice. I have no manual or anything. Suggestions? TIA, Bruce |

Actually, I have found there are forums for anything imaginable on the web. I have to believe there is a forum for boat engines. I almost said something else but it created a double entendre so I deferred.

Thanks Hesh, confirmation is very helpful. Okay, another point. As soon as I turn on the key, the horn sounds, is that normal? And it just keeps sounding when it's running.... Since I just put in a new impeller, do you think the mechanic would have checked the intake? Can't take anything for granted, but this guy used to own a boat place now retired but working out of his home place in the country. I've been running it with the ear muffs with the water flooding the yard. and it's peeing like it's supposed to out the side....? Thanks. |

Hey Bruce, Welcome to the forum, it great to have another boater around!!! Now I don't need to go to any other websites to obsess about my hobbies. My other baby I've never had an outboard so I'm not quite familiar with your Johnson, but here's my guess. I have a similar alarm on my boat (Volvo 7.4 duoprop). I agree with the other guys, it could be an overheat alarm. My Volvo motor also sounds the same alarm for oil pressure. Is it possible there is something going on with the oil injection system? A loss of oil pressure on my boat will sound the same alarm. If you can't get an answer, I can post the question over on the Crownline boat site if you like. The website there is very similar to the OLF. There are a ton of gifted experts like here on the OLF more than happy to help out. I guarentee there will be an expert over there that could probably help. Cheers...Nuclear Fishin

A bad sending unit or a bad alarm can also cause the alarm to continually sound. If you disconnect the sending unit and it keep sounding then you have a bad alarm. I don't know about your outboard but on our inboard/outboard the alarm also goes off if the leg oil reservour is low. |

Elshaw, that ain't exactly no rowboat. Wow. I can't figure out if that is a little girl or a lifelike doll? Great pictures, thanks for sharing the link to the pics. You'd laugh at my Traveler with the trolling motor mounted up front. We tossed some new seats in there and I bet the boys get a lot of mileage out of it this summer. Well if we can afford gasoline, the way it's going.
Roy O. I stand and look at the motor, and I recognize things like carburetors, starters, and fuel filters, beyond that, shucks I'm lost. But I'll keep at it. I still plan to look at Rod's links maybe that'll help a bit too. Okay Elshaw, where is the boat forum link? That sounds like a great idea. Pat, you're right, I'd give my right arm for another good ol' VeeDubYa Van, PEACE! |

Bruce, I took the liberty of posting your question on the forum. Here is a link to the Crownline forum: Crownline forum Look for the link about the outboard motor. It usually takes a day or so before you start seeing responses. BTW, I wouldn't laugh at your boat. I grew up fishing with my pop and 2 brothers on a boat just like that every summer on Lake Erie. Those are great memories. Now if want to talk about gas, try a 77 gallon tank. I better not have to fill that up more than once or twice a summer. That 454 motor is a gas

I figure that I should really get one of these. Just, because of the name, since I'm not particularly fond of catamarans, and most of my experience is in sailing small keel boats (I like the challenge of manning a boat best run by two people on my own, rather than the challenge of not tipping over, although that has a charm all its own...) |

my friend is a superyacht chef, his boss has one of these, and i got to go on it for a few days whilst the engines had to be tuned in the south of france...... it was terrible.... really awful, shocking!!

Thanks Gary, the mechanic didn't seem to worried about the horn squalling? And, get this... he even offered to buy the boat and motor. He sold it new to my Dad. Not for sale, but, I'd sure like that horn to quit. Maybe Dick Cheney can come over and blast it for me with his shotgun. |

Okay, I must be living right. Here is what I did. Nothing. And it's working great now. No more screaming horn or buzzer when I turn on the key. Actually I did a few things that undoubtedly did matter to the engine. It has two things to pump up, the fuel line and the Two-cycle oil reservoir line. I did both, with the engine sitting level for the past couple days. This morning I ran out and launched it, and cranked it. It purred like a kitten, idled perfectly, where before it wasn't at all. I guess having fresh fuel, and plenty of oil, is all it needed in the carburetors. It also would scat on the lake, never missed a beat. Now all I need is a new motor for the tilt and trim. For now, I'm simply releasing the unit, raising it for storage. Or, releasing it and leaving it down during operations. So, I'll order me a new motor for that and I'm set for the summer.
