I just thought i'd run this pic by you all and ask if you can id this wood as being walnut and if so, is walnut good for bridges ? It's an old broken jewellery box, the sides are at least 1" thick and the bottom pieces approx. 1/8"

What do you pros think? good for bridges? TIA

Serge it does look like Walnut, not ideal for bridge material, it is a little soft, open pored and light, it would make nice headplates, heel caps end wedges etc.

I love walnut, and used it for a bridge once. I didn't like it so I ended up changeing it to rosewood.

Thanks Hesh, Russell and Al, sure will listen to the wise men you are and not use this for bridges.

Thanks also for the suggestions on where to use it Russell, it sure will be used as decorative material!

Yea! It looks like walnut, you can ding it with a fingernail so it is soft!

Wait for Mark Sawnson to tune in, I believe he's used Walnut on bridges on several occasions.

Also, while this may not be a good thing, Ovations often have walnut bridges.

Mattia, I'm not sure that that is saying much.

Try a Walnut bridge plate some time and see how you like it. I have and that guitar with an Addy top was super.

I'm pretty sure Al Carruth uses walnut for bridges sometimes.

Another way to ID walnut is by the smell. Pretty distinctive. I love it.

Looks like walnut to me. I would suggest watching grain orientation if you`re going to use it for a bridge, though.
