Yesterday I was at a Timber Show and looking the Veritas System over, I managed to resist the purchase.

Anyway I think my faithful old honing guide, that I have had for years, must have known as the wheel fell off today !

So now I'm thinking of going for the Veritas as a replacement, one of the suppliers I use has it on special at the moment.

Anyway I wondered what any of you guys who own this system think about it ?

How do you find the precision of the micro bevel it achieves ?

I use this with the "Scary sharp" method - sandpaper and a glass plate, and I love it! Easy to set up and get square, and setting the microbevel is a snap.

I highly recommend it.

I echo Mark's recommendation. I use it with a combo of stone and scary sharp. Works great, micro-bevel with the eccentric adjustment works very well. No downside that I see.

I'm in for one, too... I've been mulling over buying one for the last week or so. (assuming you're talking about the honing guide, and not the MKII power sharpening system)

I just bought this one and I'm really glad I did. It's amazing how much fun it is to have sharp tools to cut things with. Gotta go make some miters now .

It was the honing guide I was looking at.

I've got one also and it works great.

John that looks cool, I'm not sure they sell the power system over here, or at least I have not seen it.

How do you change out the disks when going down the grits with that one ?

No honestly Scott the pin that holds it all together came out and the casting is broken, it was pretty cheap and I've had it a long time, I reckon it knew I'd been looking at a racier model.

I have the Mk.II jig also. Even though I have a Tormek, I still use it. It is a well engineered,well made tool. MT

I've been eyeballing it as a jig for a micro bevel. It looks like the best out there.

Yes it is a UK supplier they have it for ?29.99 at the moment which is probably more than your regular price over in the US,but cheapest I have seen it here.

Paul, after reading these posts I looked for one online. The only supplier I could find was Lee Valley ($48.50). Needless to say, I have one on the way as well as a reasonably priced Veritas straightedge. Don't you hate going to a tool site expecting to buy only one item.

That looks great, but $320 is more than I want to spend. Saw something similar handmade awhile back.
Here's what I'm going to try. About $30 off eBay, or at Toys R Us.

The Veritas® Mk.II power sharpening system is by far the best sharpener I
have ever used. I purchased one about two years ago and am still amazed at
how quick and easy it is to keep your tools REALLY scary sharp. I had
previously owned a Tormek and thought it was good but it just is not in the
same league. One of the best purchases I ever made and I fretted for weeks
about spending that much money on something that would just sharpen my
tools. Once I used it I have never regretted one dime of the purchase! Sharp
tools make much better instruments!!!!

THe only thing that worries me about a Powered system is the potential for heat build up, but it has to be said I ahve never used a tormek or the power system from Veritas, does it cool in some way or is this simply not an issue ?

I also (Mad that I am) kind of enjoy sharpening by hand, which is why I have never really considered one of these powered systems.

I have the Tormek and it keeps the blades very cool while using. The wheel spins through a bath of cold water as you use it, and it also spins at a slower rpm making heat a non-issue. I believe the Veritas has a similar way of dispensing water while you sharpen.

I didn't realise they were cooled.

No water on the Veritas. But also absolutely no problem with heat buildup.
