I just got back in the county tonight from an amazing and rewarding
week!
Not a single guitar!!!!
This past week certainly puts lutherie in perspective.
I, along with a bunch of my collegues, just came back from a volunteer
week
in rural Mexico. We are members of a outreach group that peforms free
care
and surgery for poor children. This week we helped over 250 children
with
free eye and craniofacial surgery. We put a lot of smiles on many children
that would never have been able to have this kind of surgery.
If any of you ever get the opportunity to volunteer to help worthy causes,
do
so!!!
Andy
The picts are of me and an ophthalmologist friend of mine

A great thing to do, Andy! As I said before--you've got the two most important jobs in the world...saving lives, followed by lutherie!

Andy, that's some awesome work you are doing. I'm gearing up for my annual missions trip to KY this summer. They tend to frown upon me doing medical work, what with me not having a degree or attended med school. Oh, well, construction is pretty rewarding too.
Keep up the good work. Pwoolson38837.333912037

That's really cool Andy. There is nothing more rewarding than giving back to society on a voluntary basis on occasion. It really helps keep our perspective.
We're really a global community, and as Americans, most of us are a good deal more fortunate than a lot of the people in the world. We just don't realize it.

Paul, a missions trip to Kentucky????

Sure, Hazzard County, KY. One of the poorest counties in the US. Most of the folks in the area don't have plumbing or electricity. Pretty bad conditions to be living in.

The pictures say it all. Andy, thank you for being a part of making life better for those less fortunate.

And thanks for reminding us all to do good for others, it helps both ways, them and us.

That's terrific Andy! How were the facilities and working conditions? The logistics alone in organizing that large a medical team and supplies must be a real challenge.

What I would like to do is try to set these kinds of missions here in the US.
There are so many in need in our country

Good thing they have the Duke boys to keep old Boss Hog in line!
Seriously though the divide between affluents and working/poor is a crucial issue that, if not addressed - will eventually lead to the crumbling of the Western Empire as we know it. Its a historical pattern that has repeated since time immemorial. Hopefully we are evolved enough to develop a truly egalitarian society, where poverty is erased!

Andy,

You're the man! Thanks for sharing with us your experience of renewed perspective. It's a good reminder for us to get out of the garage (and/or put the guitar down) long enough to give back to the world by more directly beneficial means.

Darren
