Well, I went and ordered the wrong fretwire from LMI, their standard gold-colored wire instead of silver-colored. I have a set of nickle plated tuners that I was planning on using. What do you think? Too garish to have gold frets and nickle tuners? Should I bite the bullet and wait the time it takes to return the gold wire and get back some silver wire? Hardly seems worth the shipping to return $12 worth of fretwire! |

The gold fret wire caught my eye as well, though I didn't order any yet. I imagine it could look pretty nice in the right combination. What are you using for the fingerboard? |

Wait for the nickel wire... the gold stuff would look out of place with nickel tuners. Either that or order gold tuners. |

Hesh Stewmac do a Waverley Tuner in Nickel and Stakewood, that is not listed in their catalogue, but is available if you ask, that might look cool on you latest. |
return and wait...... I am debating if I should put nickle/ebony tuners on the walnut/sitka/ebony guitar that I am building right now because I already have them or get something gold because it would look better.
Gold is nice, and gold is flashy, but consider that nickel is the best-wearing of all the available platings. Gold plated metal looks really ugly when the shiny stuff starts to wear; chrome peels and pits; but nickel tends to wear smoothly and contrasts nicely with the base metal underneath, giving it a broken-in look, rather than broken-down. Ebony and nickel is a good, long-lasting combination. |
