Hi All I am going to make a fingerstyle OM with some killer 5A Koa. It will be my first cutaway. For my other OM, I love the cedar top...matched with cocobolo....Amazing tone I have both a cedar and lutz spruce top to choose from for this one....What do you all think? Would the darker look of cedar not look well matched with 5A Koa???? I know this is a personal question, but have any of you used Cedar with Koa or Lutz with Koa Thanks Andy |

Lutz with Koa Andy, i must admit that the red cedar - koa is tempting tho. |

I would go with the cedar/koa. Although I have never built with koa...I have heard it is in the same tonal ballpark as mahogany. I personally think that cedar/mahogany is one of the best wood combinations available to a luthier - when it is well done, it is magical. I would think cedar/koa would also be an incredible combination and also very versatile. |

All things considered, cedar. |

It depends on what you mean by "fingerstyle" playing. If you're talking Chet Atkins type fingerstyle, then spruce. If you're talking celtic or other more modern styles like Keaggy et al., then cedar is good. Redwood is even better. |

I know of several very experienced Luthiers(around 300 mark) who love cedar/koa guitars for light fingerstyle. I've done a Cedar/Myrtle, and a Cedar/EIR, and now the Bouzouki I just strung up is Cedar/Koa. Amazing sound, but I don't have a guitar in that wood combination to compare it to. But this thing is extremely light! Good luck! Tracy |
