Ordering abalone for fretboard inlay on the kids' Terz. I haven't bought abalone in decades, can't remember how big an area an ounce of abalone would be. Can somebody clue me in? Thx.

Typically 14-16 pieces from ?”-1" wide x 1”-1 1/2" long. They are likely to be ill-regular shaped meaning trapezoidal in shape. Sometimes you run across abalone 1 ?” wide x 2” long but not often

I wish I could typ I typed 4-6 the first time should be 14-16MichaelP38842.7234375

another way to look at it is about 5 to 5 1/2" total square area but like I said the blanks will be ill-regular in shape.MichaelP38842.7253472222

Our fine sponsor, Allied Lutherie has some nice specials on red abalone and a mix of gold and white mother of pearl. Check it out.... down at the bottom right.

Hi Burbank! We recently ordered an ounce of red abalone from one of Allied's specials. I counted them right from the bag and there are 8 pieces with the average size at about 1" x 1 1/2". I must say there are some beautiful ones in there and will be fun to work with. We also ordered a 1/2 pound of gold MOP on another one of their specials and WOW, that was a lot of pearl. I have used some on two inlay projects already and still have quite a bit left.

Good luck and I can't wait to see the fretboard when you get it finished. Do we get an inside scoop on what the design will be?

Lacey,

This is my second. It's a Terz for my kids, but mostly for my daughter (she's 9, my 6 y.o. son wants an electric). I'm from Hawaii and she's very interested in things Hawaiian, so it will be in koa from Doug Kleist of Blue Spirit, with a Lutz top from BobC. The fb will be a Japanese-like rendition of bamboo ,at least that's the plan, and something small that's related to palm trees, but I don't know yet where that will go. Maybe an orchid somewhere. We'll see!

Thanks for all the info!burbank38842.8087268519
