This is the 1st wood rosette I've made and I think I made it a bit too large. The bubinga is 11/16 wide, should have made it closer to 1/2. What do you guys think?

Dave, for me, it is a bit to big, but unless you plan on starting over, your sort of committed now. Id say build on!
There is always your next guitar for making changes to things your didnt like about your current one.

Depends on your overall design, but personally, I like my rosettes on the large side. Yours is about 1mm smaller than the two rosettes I've done, and while I'll probably try downsizing a little, I doubt I'll go as small as 1/2" for my larger bodies. It's more of a 'classical' size than the trad thin-line rosette many steelstrings have, but it is in no way a bad thing. IMO.

Yeah,I'm stuck with this one I guess. Thanks Lance
Mattia- Yours are actually larger than mine, That makes me feel better about it. Maybe it will look OK when its completed. ThanksDaveAndy38843.447025463

Dave

It will look just fine. Just tell people who ask that it's a well known fact that big rosette equaks big sound

Mattia,

Lovely work

It's just a matter of perception. If you think it is a tad big then it probaly is. Me? I like mine a little smaller, but that's just an opionion.. Next year big rosettes will be all the rage.

By the way. That's a nice job of making and installing a rosette

I like it! Hey, just charge a little more...after all it's got the "Big" rosette in it! No skimmpy, cheap, skinny, little, barely-can-see jobber! Go for it!

p.s. any one says it's too big...ask them if their girl friend ever said that? This one's made for the guys with big feet...it's all relative...

Once you get everything together, it won't seem as large I think.

Here is my last build, it has a 5/8" rosette including purfling lines.

Mattia, I love the shape of that first guitar, any chance of a plan?Rod True38843.4558680556

Dave, mine was also big and i had to abandon the cutaway idea because of it, nontheless, i'm sure my rosette won't look as big when all is done, nor will yours! It's all

Excellent execution on yours bud, nice bubinga ya got there!

Congrats!

Serge

Rod: thanks! Maybe some day, but not any time soon, I'm afraid. I took the basic dimensions off a Taylor -14 series, and connected the dots in a way I found more pleasing...

Dave, been there done that. On one I did, I ended up routing another channel in the middle of the rosette and installing some abalone or abalam to break it up and it worked for me. Just a thought.

Dave it looks fine to me, if it was all covered in abalone I'd say no but it's great, and well executed. classical guitar rossettes are often 3/4" in width on faily small bodied guitars. So don't worry about it just build on.

Sometimes when we do wood rosettes too narrow, it doesn't give you the sense of the wood itself. You almost need it on the wide side to see the grain and give it more interest. I did an amboyna burl rosette a few years ago on the wide side, but that was the only way to really appreciate the burl.

Mattia, those are very nice indeed!
