I was all set to lap and put the final edge on my new Pfiel {metric} chisels, I trued up my stones -
{I had to get arkasas b4 anyone says anything they had sold out of japanese water stones}
After lapping one I took out the veritas MkII honing guide and feeling all good about myself, put in the chisel, adjust the angle to 25degrees, set the width of the chisel, put it on the stone and whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa????
I check the 30 degree angle setting nope too much, I decide to chage the honing guide to high angle and check the angle again, nope and NOPE!~!!!!!
They appear to have a primary bevel of 27.5 degrees or so.
So, what should I do take these chisels down to 25deg,{which in my extremely limited shop would be alot of work}
or find the 27.5degrees on the MKII and drill a new setting hole?
I mean, is there any concievable reason that I would need 25degrees exactly on a chisel, besides making it work with presets on this honing guide?

I would have thought you would be cool at 27.5 Degrees, in fact many people sharpen at 30 and higher for work in hardwoods.

I would have been cool at either 25 30 35, or whatever for starters, seeing as this REALLY EXPENSIVE honing guide I bought, has angles that increase in 5 degree incrememnts. and I dont mean, 22.5 27.5......etc
But what kind of expensive thingy for woodworking would it be if you didnt have to modify it out of the box somehow?
You kind of answered my question there in a way anyhow, I am inexperienced with fine woodworking equipment, the nicest set of chisels I have ever had is a carpenters set beveled at 25deg.

PS the MKII system is much more complicated than the musical roller system, but just as fun by the sounds of it. - I dont know If I would have had this problem with a North American brand of chisel.charliewood38843.5725810185

To my mind it is the chisel that is ground wrong, rather than the veritas guide being off, it might be worth simply regrinding the chisel, and using the standard setting. When it comes to things like this Todd is your man, he is a Guru on woodworking equipment and its configuration/setting up.

I had the same problem with my MkII power system, I wonder of they maybe have fewer degrees on their protractor in Canada? For the money you'd think it'd be right on. Why have a jig if it is'nt on the money.

Actually with all the beauracracy up here we probabaly have more degrees on our protractors,
What did you end up doing about it - regrind to 30?35?
Im thinking of just piloting a couple new holes.

So what are you saying John? the MKII was actually off? or your chisels were at an different angle than the jig would accomodate? - I never even considered the fact that the guide might be off!!!

I am just getting on a double end grinder and angle jig set up right now, although I havent ordered any wheels for it yet, I have a soft and hard arkansas stone - and Im planning on getting a couple Japanese water stones as soon as I can find a good deal on some good ones, I have some silicon carbide paper on route as well, I just rasn out.
You sound like your the pro what are your suggestions?

If the chisel is 27.5 degrees, its easiest to just sharpen it at 30 - if you go lower to 25, then you will either have to grind it, or work it on the stone forever. I would simply just start sharpening it at 30, micro bevel at 31, and eventually the whole bevel will get ground off to 30 from 27.5 as you go thru more sharpenings.

I use the original Veritas, have for about 15 years, and never really care what the angle is, could be 27, could be 32, as long as I get the chisel sharp. I do use a small rosewood jig to setup my plane blades for 42 degrees (I have two Veritas low angles set up to plane at 54) . I am planning to get the mark 2 though, because it will save in the setup and allow for easier repeatability.
