I want to make a feedback buster for one of my guitars.
I want to make a soundhole plug of packing foam, not styrofoam. The stuff I'm thinking of sometimes is used inside boxes for computers, stereo's, etc. I've seen it colored black, sometimes beige. Some is soft and squishy, and some is stiff, but porous. It might be called breathable foam.

Anyone know of alternative materials, and a good way to cut foam w/o a hotwire?

The insulation guys that I work around use a long thinblade knife with a sliicing motion.

I cut foam on a bandsaw, works beautifully!

Yep! A band saw is the best bet. If you don't have one am electric knive works ok

The best way to cut that type of foam is with an electric knife. Like a hot knife through butter! You can shape and trim to your hearts content will great control. This is what the upholstery pros use in their shops.

My vote would be for the Electric Carving Knife or a Hot Wire Cutter (typically used for surf boards and model airplane wings)

The Hot Wire is Sweet...but...not usally avaible to most people (including me at the present time). They are fairly easy to make...just do a web search.

With a foam knife?

kidding...of course...depending on the type of foam one the above methods should work well. I have also clamped a straight edge over the foam and used a razor...worked pretty good.Dave-SKG38844.615775463

You can also contour foam with a rotary sander and course paper(40-80).
