For those of you who don't know, This is Bill's first guitar - a kit from StewMac. Bill owns one of my guitars, and has had the itch to build one for quite awhile and finally took the plunge. He built this under the guidance of Brad Nickerson, an extremely talented and knowledgeable builder. Congrats on ths first build Bill! You'll be replacing that D.E.Williams guitar with one of your own in no time! 
Those bursted tops are really growing on me....Must be that guitar of Hesh's that did it... |

One of the things that always seems to play a big role in how much I like a burst is the color transitions. This one is so smooth, and the colors are oober cool! Awesome. |

Thanks greatly for the compliments. As Don said, I built this under the watchful eye of Brad Nickerson, whom I greatly admire. Brad didn't allow me to make the "big" mistake (despite not being entirely certain what that is), but he did: allow me to ruin my original pair of sides (they're hanging on my wall as a reminder), allow me badly overrout the neck pocket (and then make me fix it), insist I make/shape my own braces, force me to accurately re-bend the sides on a pipe, insist I do the binding by myself (he handed me tape), install and then have to chisel out an entire side of kerfing, recommend recarving the neck profile, suggest filling and redrilling the tuner holes...and LOTS of other things that let me learn from this first guitar. My advice to anyone who can find a teacher like this is go for it without hesitation. I truly believe it takes months off of the learning curve. Serge: I've been a guitar junkie for the better part of 20 years. I've bought and sold many, many guitars...so from that perspective I was bit by the bug a long time ago. As for building another...well, Bob C is my new best friend.  |

Bill, I had a great experience studying with Brad Nickerson in the fall of 1998. I built both a flat top and an archtop under his guidance. This is, hands down, the best way to learn instrument building. The hardest part of beginning to build myself was trying to recreate all the jigs and fixtures that brad had built. Very nice work on your build there. I love the bursts, especially the old Gibson variety!! Cheers, Louis |

Louis: I'm elated to meet a third Brad student. Brad has lots of cool little things/jigs; simple but well thought out. I took loads of photos of the jigs he has, and of course, I can always go back and spend some time in his shop trying to recreate them if needed. He and I have developed a decent friendship. In the grand scheme of things, Brad is mostly an artist - yet his "by eye" things are astonishingly accurate. His flattops are very nice, but his archtops are not of this world. |

I've been after him to post more pics too....he sends me the occasional pic, but for some reason I can only save them as .bmp files, which we can't upload here. Not even Photoshop can grab them and convert them, or I'd post them. |
