Tim, just thought I would jump in here and post the images of the Birdseye figured boards you posted in earlier threads. This will save people moving back and forth, I just copied them and re-posted. 
I think that these boards will make some amazing looking guitars with the darker Birdseye contrasting with the lighter 3D depth in the figure, any of this stuff available to us locals?? Cheers Kim |

Tim, is this "true" birdsye like birdseye rock maple which is formed as indented rings, cone shaped as the tree ages and adds growth rings or is it more like pin knot formation? Do you have a photo of an end cut which dissects the "birdseye" pattern? This might help folks decide. Personally, I'd like some of it, but the "birdseye" doesn't look quite right to me. It does look "similar" to the giant birdseyes I have in my Queensland Maple stock. True birdseye shows the "eyes" on a flatsawn or rift cut while showing the cone shaped rings on the radial cut. Is this wood flatsawn? |

In thought it would be appropriate to respond to Larry's thoughts about "birdseye" as offered as one of the blackwood buying options. It is first of all important to note that the material has been offered as "Birdseye Fiddleback" Blackwood. It is a combination of birdseye and fiddleback figure.There are varying levels of each feature. I have attached another image of some side material showing an intense area of birdseye. You will notice on the backsawn edge of the PREVIOUS IMAGES (larkim) where the sapwood occurs, that there are eliptical figures in the grain. The entire log had these dimpled feature around its girth. Any variation bewteen blackwood and another timber such as Qld Maple is irrelevant. regards Tim Australian Tonewoods
