I have a fever and the only thing that's gonna cure it is more Cow Bell!....eeerrr I mean Ziricote!

This image stolen from Colonial Tonewoods is what I'm looking for and I couldn't find anything similar on our Sponsors web sites. I'm hoping one of them might have a secret stash that hasn't been displayed yet.

Hesh you have been mentioning that Jim Beam a lot lately. Hmmmm....

What I'm looking for in Ziricote is stuff that has straightish dark lines from top to bottom and are spaced fairly close together. Your's seem to be a bit wide and wiggly.

Man-o-man, I love the look of ziricote. Could any of you please comment on its tap tone? I build classicals, and I prefer back sets with a bright, metallic tap tone. Good Braz has it, as does the best EIR. I've also found great tap tone with a pau ferro set (Bolivian rosewood) I used on one guitar. But it would be nice to offer the ziricote option for those folks who really like the spider-web look.

Regarding finding a primo set -- especially if money is not a real object, I guess what I'd do, if I'm buying the set over the phone or the internet, would be to emphasize to the seller my tastes and preferences, and ask specifically what their return policy was in the event that I was not satisfied.

Best,

Michael

Nothing quite like that Mexican Crackwood.
It sure is gorgeous, but will crack if you look at it wrong. Keep a botle of thin CA handy when you use the stuff.

Look for the good stuff...well quartered and you get the great medullary rays with it

My single OM-sized set came form Ed Dicks, and it is rather lovely. Hypnotic. But oh so expensive.

All joking aside about the cracking...

I think Ziricote is one of the best tonewoods out there. It is almost always glassy, and the figure when quartered has great looking medulary rays and tight figure. For me, it is a strong favorite. I built my very first guitar way back in '98 with it. I bent the sides on a pipe. I'll never do that again...it can be tough to bend even with a heat blanket.
I have a set right now that while doesn't have the most color in the world, it is beautifully quartered and squeaks in the hand like plate glass. It's a keeper.

I bought one set from the Zootman way back when. I wish I could have bought a dozen, it is really great. Unlike Don's set, it bent easily on my bender, and worked well. The tap tone is amazing and the looks are hard to beat.

Larry that quarted stuff is fantastic!

Graham, good luck on your search, let us know what you find.

Jeff

Ziricote is one of my favorite looking woods, for sure... Gorgeous guitars Graham and Jeff!

Hesh, I won't say what name I had in mind for you when I saw again what beautiful zoot you had acquired... (rhymed with plucky hansard...) You're starting to have one impressive pile of zoot... BRW, the tiger stuff from down unda, this gorgeous set of Ziricote... I guess that couch is really well broken in now!

Here is a set I got from Colonial a year or so ago, its being made into an L1 cutaway.

I thinned it to about .070 and it bent readily. I have had cracking issues as I have worked the rims, but as Don said, keep a bottle of CA handy and you'll be fine it is my favorite wood.
