Gotta get a new one ASAP, suggestions?
I have a 1200 square foot basement, within that basement is my 264 Sqft shop. Id like to be able to do the whole basement. In general, my basement is pretty dry. No mold, dark black corners, its a poured wall, cement basement thats 4 years old.
Ive been looking at a 70 pint Kenmore

Just so happens that is the exact model I just purchaed three weeks ago. It has a digital readout, 3 or 6 hr run on/off timer if you want to run it only for those amounts of hrs. per day. it has a 70 pint container and a direct line out to a hose/sewer. I don't have a drain handy so I have to empty the water by hand. Here in Fl that's almost a daily chore. You probably would go much longer. It is a little louder than I would have liked...about as loud as a window a/c unit. Other than that I like it.

Kenmore and Whirlpool, one and the same. Tim runs an entire Whirlpool plant single-handedly. Isn't that right Tim. Good choice.

Yes, Bruce, Whirlpool and Kenmore is one in the same (on most models). Although, not all Kenmore products are made by Whirlpool and since we don't make dehumidifiers here at our plant I can't say for sure. Many of the internal components are identical (on most appliances) and when you get into higher end models you are paying for touch control electronics and fancier exterior gingerbread. I personally look at the lower end of the model spectrum and find analog controls to be more robust and cheaper to replace should you need repair parts down the road.

whats the difference between the 50 and the 70 pint? Is it just the amount of water it can hold? or Pull from the air in a set amount of time?

I'm not 100% sure of this but I think it is the amount of water it can remove from the air in a 24 hour period. I have the Maytag unit 70 pint which I guess is the same thing.John How38366.4360763889

Stop gap solution, A friend here at work just offered me a 40 pint unit, its 2 years old, and free
Its not large enough for my whole basement, but should work fine for my 12x22 shop. Ill have to invest in a larger unit for the rest of the basement before summer.

You forgot the second step ......

Dry it out before turning it on

We used to remove the cover and power wash window AC units, motor, controls, evaporator, condensor, the works ... but we always blew it out with compressed air thoroughly before powering it up and never lost one either. Maybe we were reeeeeely lucky.

I have power washed my Dehumidifier twice a year for 8 years. Never had a problem. I suspect what happened is it burned out due to the fins being packed with sawdust

Guess it could a used 3 washes this year...

Mine just died of unknown causes...
I think it might be because it ran for 24/7 for months on end... that might could do it.

Thats what mine does, the fan runs, but the compressor is not.

For the record, Joe Gannon the Appliance doctor, a nationally syndicated radio show host gave out that advise. And I believe everything I hear

Wow you are still de-humidifying, even in the winter? I run my sears model 70 (I think it was a cool air model or something) in the summer, but once the heat kicks on my shop starts to dry. I too work like a groundhog in the cellar but I think the concrete acts like a big plenum and I don't get any wild swings. (That's good) It was raining here this morning (it since has turned to snow) and I did creep upto 46% with my humidifiers running. I turned em down to low, but the heat is running more now that it is snowing and I am down to 44%. I like to run around 40% but without my humidifiers going I will go much lower.

My shop is heated only by the inefficiency of my oil burner and its radiant heat coming from it. It was 68 degrees in there this morn. It gets cold in my shop in cold sunny days as my house has lots of windows and it heats up quite well from the solar effect. My oil burner doesn't come on much so it get cold down there. Haven't had to worry about that much this year, as I don't really rememember when the sun was out.

Anyway I did have one of my humidifiers go bad this summer. It seemed like the sensor is bad, but I didn't have the time to mess with it and I was really starting to get damp so I just bought a new one.

Oh and yes I only use the radio shack temp/humidity gage. I have 2 of them (to check on each other) and they agree. I know it is not as accurate as the wet bulb but it really seems to let me know when I am getting out of contol

I am adding humidity this time of year
My gas shop heater dries me out big time, but my Kenmore 14 gallon humidifier saves the day.
