The reported standard inside diameter for pre-cut abalone rosettes is 4.921" or 125mm according to LMI, StewMac, DePaule, and others. While laying out the rosette and purfling around the soundhole, the rosette seems to be very wide in relation to a soundhole diameter of 3-3/4" or even 4".

Has anybody used this standard rosette diameter and if so what has been your typical soundhole diameter? Did you inlay purfling between the soundhole and rosette?luthier2438892.6074768519

I use Andy DePaule's abalone all the time. I usually add 3 purfling strips to
the inside and outside of the abalone. (Right next to it, not another channel)
For My OM's I use a 3/ 7/8th soundhole

I always have a purfling border in same channel as abalone in my abalone
rosettes. This gives you a little bit of leeway if the abalone pieces arent
exactly same radius as channel. After fitting the abalone and purfling you
can add a bit of water to swell up the wood around small gaps between
the purfling and channel sides.

Im currently making up my rosettes using 25mm square pieces of
abalone as supplied by Stewmac. I sand inside radius of each piece on a
sanding drum in the drill press and then cut outside radius with jewellers
saw (fine blade) and trim on sanding drum wioth abalone piece clamped
in a holder that rotates on a pivot. Final shaping is done by hand with a
sanding board.

My method basically follows that outlined in Campianos book.
