I'm contemplating the necks for the next two guitars, and I think I want to do a laminated neck - Mahogany with a maple-rosewood-maple center strip. What do folks do for the rosewood center strip. Do you just buy a set of sides and use those?

I would still cut out one piece necks like I do now, but from a laminated blank.

TIA,

-Mark

Mark, your idea of using a side for this sounds great but you can also resaw from an existing plank and bring it down to thickness with the drum sander or a jointer edger.

Sides are a good optionm and I've got several EIR sides for exactly that purpose - head over the the swap meet, BobC's got a number of orphaned sides (cocobolo, among other things) that would probably be pretty darn good choices for this kind of thing.

I reasaw mine then either run them through my planer, or my thickness sander. My center lams are usually curly maple, walnut, or purpleheart. Thickness runs from 1/8" to 1/2" .

Yeah, Check with any of the suppliers here for orphaned sides. Get the cheapest grade because all you see is the small edge.

Bob C. has pre-cut rosewood lamination pieces ready to go. Two thicknesses. Check toward the bottom of his "necks" page.

Mark,

If you wanted a wider rosewood center strip, here's another option.

There's a hardwood dealer local to me (Clarke Hardwoods) that has a LOT of EIR in fairly small planks -- just about the right size for sides, but every one of the ones I looked at were flatsawn. But you could get a piece like this and cut out sections, flip them 90* and have qs pieces for your insert, and then they could be pretty much any width you wanted (up to the width of the plank, of course).

Best,

Michael
