Well the Koa sections prove to be very fragile. In particularly the ones cut skewed to the grain. but after 2 days of mitering and re-cutting a couple pieces of Koa I am about 3/4 way through with this rosette. I still have the outer ring of Paua to install but had to take a break. Actually I got to have Andy send me some more Blue Paua ![]() ![]() |

A beautiful piece of work Michael. If you dont mind me asking a few questions: is that a double row of paua pieces on the inner ring? Is the purfling stock Stewmac or LMI purfling? Did you fit koa and purfling and then fit in the paua? Cheers |

The purfling is LMI .066 BWB yes that is a double row of Paua on the inner ring. I first cut a donut of koa and segmented it into 12 pieces. Then miter purfed each segment. Her is a pic ![]() Once the segments were purfed .09 thick by the way, I channeled the rosettte into the top. The ring purflings at .09 deep the paua rings at .06 deep and the Koa rings at .09 deep. I then glued in the Koa using double stacked Paua as seperators. Then glued in the BWB outer and inner purfling rings. This left me with the Paua channels to fill. By routing the purfling and Koa channels deep eliminated the need for teflon fill. but of course I had to carfuly rout those channels fo a good tight fit. |

That's an amazing rosette. The work that you had to put into it and the end result are both very impressive. |

I'm impressed with the uniformity. Nice work all around. I've got an 1/8" ring of the blue paua from Andy also. Did you have him cut the outer ring to a different radius, or did you shape that yourself? Ron |

Michael, that is an outstanding display of creativity, skill and perserverance! 48 mitres -- ughh -- what does your head feel like (let alone your eyes, neck and back) after two days of that kind of intricate work? |

neither I broke straights to form both rings. Unless the inside diameter is the standard 4.93" I just break straights into small sections. goes quick enough. |

Andy it was not as bad as I thought it would be. The biggest issue was the clamping the purfling to the Koa. Not that the clamping was hard but the Koa that was cut skewed to the grain was fragile and easy to break during glue up. I did all the mitering with a jeweler's magnifier on. The Koa pieces are only .38" x 1.13" x .09" thick so clamping the curved pieces of purfling properly aligned to the Koa was the biggest challenge of the mitering. I would carefully measure each piece and miter it before bending then gluing it to the Koa. and fit the end piece miters after the curves were glued and set. |

Thanks Ron. I have to give credit where due. The new Stewmac rosette cutter is a huge step above their older version. I built a sacrificial fixture plate that the pivot rod is inset into and made darn sure it was true and plumb all the way around. Both the cutting of the Koa donut and the channeling of the top went super quick with great accuracy. I don't think I could have done near as accurately concentric fit with the old one. The micro adjustment make all the difference. |
