Actually I have to correct my own statement (another sure sign that I'm getting older
)..
That is for cedar braces, for spruces ones they are a bit under 1/4 and still about 3/4" tall....

Yes, a bit--but mainly thinner, as needed. I also scallop pretty much like the Martin blueprint. |

I just cut a dozen sets of main xbraces, addy, 11/16ths tall is my blank size. 5/16ths wide, by 18 1/2 inches long, by 11/16ths tall. My Taylor Dred has 3/8 thick braces. |

I typically make my braces about 1/4 inch wide and about 5/8 inch tall at the highest point. I also profile the braces to a tall triangular cross section and then make a porpois shaped curve to the brace that is thickest at the X and tapers out paper this at the perimeter. Braces are shaped so many different ways, that the absolute height of a brace is just a starting point. But, since I don't scallop near the bridge, thinner braces work well. |

Mine are a hair bigger than 1/4" at the base (close to 9/32"), and about 3/4" at the tallest point (where the two braces cross), I then taper them from the soundboard up to a gradual point at the top (so the whole brace starts at a slight slope). I don't carve them in the martin fashion but taper them over towards the edges of the guitar and then put feet on then ends that notch into the top. I also laminate in a CF strip to keep the top stable and add a little strength, makes carving a trick but I think the stability is worth the effort. Cheers -Paul- |
